Brilliant example, thanks.

On my Panasonic dx902 there are loads of ire settings, and after adjusting them to recommended settings from avforums, the picture looked completely washed out and quite dark on SDR, but after that I didn't really try them on any 4K content.

I reset them all back to factory and the picture is back to normal.

It's frustrating that there aren't any recommended settings from any of these specialist reviewers or websites for sdr as I'm sure that's what 90% of owners are using it for at the moment.

On the 902b I found setting Gamma to 2.4 is the most important setting, that gives you a bit more pop.
Also, turn the backlight and contrast up and drop brightness a couple of clicks, this will give the image some depth.

With LCDs I prefer to crush a bit of detail in the lower IRE ranges, otherwise as you say it just looks washed out.

I also drop colour a bit too, I used to set my displays up using a Sony pro camera plugged in, face the thing out the window and and when what you see on the screen matches what you see out the window...bingo. It was amazing how accurate that was when you then got the coloromiter out and took measurements.

This was a screenshot of my old Pioneer after doing exactly that, I took it to show what a nice natural picture you can get doing that.

I'm no AV expert, but having finished setting up my B6V last night, I can't believe that any LCD television can compare with OLED. The black levels are incredible. I bought my TV as an insurance replacement for my GT30 and I didn't think I'd be able to get a TV to be on par with the plasma clarity and black levels, but the LG has just smashed my expectations out of the water. OLED is definitely the future, and for less than £1500 (£1489 I paid on Sunday) I don't think there's a better 55" TV on the market in that price range. All subjective of course, up to you to do your own comparisons before buying.
