Out of interest, what BenQ do you have?
I've been eyeballing the W1200 or W1300 on the Bay of E, primarily because they have lens shift which I believe is going to be useful
I’ve got the W1070, I’ve had it for about four years and it has been brilliant.

It has got the lens shift as well, and it is very useful. A lot of people don’t seem to realise that you can’t just ‘point the projector down a bit’ if you mount it a little too high. Well, you can, but you will bet an bling image!

The W1070 is one of the only pieces of kit that I never look to upgrade. Fan noise is not ideal, but the jump in price for a slight picture quality advantage is too much for me to consider it yet.

I read a recent review of 4k projectors, and "less than 4k" projectors where they pull off some tricks to get near to 4k resolution. The conclusion was that you just can't see the difference unless you are uncomfortably close to the screen. So 1080p represents great value right now.

Regardless of the fact that a TV will always be better quality in comparison, once you fire up a PJ and switch of the lights, it really doesn't matter one iota. The projected image looks "perfect" without comparison. Sharp, fluid. It's only when you switch off the PJ and fire up the TV that you see the extra brighrness and contrast. But who cares? It's not about the comparison, it's about the viewing experience of the film at the time.

I run an Optoma HD200x (1080p) on a 135" screen. Was under £600 new at the time. It is better than being at the cinema. Hands down.

Grab a 1080p PJ for pocket money and laugh at how good they are.

I preferred watching films on my 84 inch screen via an Epson 6100 PJ (nothing special; 1080p, 3LCD based) over watching them on my 55inch 4k HDR OLED.

So I've had more thought (and measurement) and now looks like I need a short throw item rather than a regular (as I've only got just over 3m from lens to screen).

BenQ W1070 seems a good shout.
any other alternatives I should look into?

What size screen are you planning to use?

I used my W1070 to project onto a 92" diagonal screen with the lens exactly 92" from the screen.

The Benq range seems do be about the only ones that can do that, and that is fully zoomed in. There is a Benq 'ST' range that is even shorter throw (too short for my use) but most other manufacturers would only give me an 80" image from that distance.

I've had an inFocus 1080p short throw projector for about 5 years. It's never given any trouble and has about 3000 hours on it. It also cost less than £600 new.

I'd like to use something about 2.8m wide I think which should work with the 1070 at that range.

You'll need to have the lens a minimum of 3.22m from the screen to get the image that size. If that works you are good to go.

That is a very similar ratio to mine (you have a longer throw and a bigger screen). I doubt you'll find much else that will do that throw, but let me know if you do!
