It must be 30 years since I owned an amp with tone controls. I can’t even remember any friends in that time that have had amps with tone controls or ‘loudness’ buttons.

What I have found is that most people I know who don’t give two sts about ‘quality’ often call ‘bass’ something closer to lower mids - around 120Hz which gives more of a ‘smack’ imho. What I call ‘real’ bass, where rooms get pressurised at high volume, never fails to astound. Whether they choose to invest the time, money and effort to get similar in their own homes is another subject...

I think it was Gizlaroc who mentioned it earlier but a well recorded live album is usually enough to convince - no real need for synthesised electronic sub-bass tracks to prove a point.
Ha! Listen to one now on my office system...

...got to treat the old girl with respect! Just out of interest, can anybody shed any light on what the ‘high filter’ and ‘subsonic filter’ is supposed to do?

^ thanks chap, much appreciated. the amp is used to just stream tidal from my work pc, so I suppose these are not really doing much good if not a vinyl source.

^ snap! I have the M5 tape desk as well. I think they are really nice units, there is quite a bit of crackle on the volume pot but by streaming through a computer you don’t need to adjust this manually on the unit. Get it out of the loft and enjoy!

Quick update from me. For the month of May I’m keeping it simple. The Nait 2/ Kan is accompanied by a Rega RP8 and my 2 half size Sony spinners, The D-88 discman and the PS-Q3a record player.

D-88 in action, when it decides to work!

2nd Kitchen system! Sharp GF-525 with Sony deck. With line-in, line out, phono inputs, mic in with volume control, it’s a lot of fun.

It’s good to see this thread get a bump. My turn to share ...

I’m a sucker for everything matching so, from top to bottom have the following (all from Cyrus) CD7, Stream Xa, AV Master 8.0, Cyrus 7, PSX-R (for the Stream Xa), Smartpower Plus (centre speaker), Smartpower Plus (rear speakers) and a Stereo 200 (front speakers). Front speakers (one visible in the shot) are Cyrus CLS-70s, centre and rear are Arcam Muso and there’s an Arcam sub hiding off to the left. Cyrus Hark rack (took me a long time to acquire the necessary number of shelves and hence only really “finished” this set up with a few eBay purchases when we moved back to the UK recently) for the equipment and Cyrus/Arcam stands for the speakers. Will not be everyone’s cup of tea but I really like the look of the half size, silver boxes ... and once you have a few you have to stick with them if you want it to match smile
This Looks a great set-up, always fancied a Cyrus set-up on a Hark rack, enjoy!

Me: I quite like that.

Goes on to ebay to have a look at the pri.... yikes
I think their high price reflects just how rare they are and the fact they were the very pinnacle of the FH range. I looked for 4 years to find a good one in the UK. I would be interested to find out what they retailed new, must have been an arm and a leg as the quality of the unit is immense and the sound from cassette play back is absolutely gobsmacking.

When I were a lad, I worked in a mid-range independent HiFi specialist just after i left school. We stocked some of the greats - Akai, Aiwa, Yamaha, Sony, Technics (We could just stock and sell SL-1210s all day long if we wanted to)
Anyway, the FH-909r superseded me by a few months, but it's replacement - can't remember the model number - was just as outrageous in both looks, performance and price. It was 4 MIDI separates in an odd-but-cool grey 'feltish' finish (no, really), which each weighed a ton with speakers to match and cost £1099 - in 1990.
Thanks for replying, I would say around the grand mark might have been about right, there is very little info on the model on the web which is a surprise. Maybe it was the la scala system which you were thinking of, they had weird looking electrostatic speakers? After the 909 I think the quality of the Sony portables started to fall off as people became more cost conscious.

LP12 with various upgrades.
Naim NDX2.
Supernait 3.
Naim Fraim.
Hi-Line x 1, Power-Lines x 2.
NAC A5 feeding Focal Kanta 2s.
Focal Elears.
2 x Mu-so Qb and 2 x Naim Mu-so throughout the house.

Absolutely no desire to spend anymore money!

That's a fantastic set-up. Look after that lot and it should outlast you!

The Naim upgrade path, (although perfectly fine for those who have the cash) very quickly falls into the realms of gilding the Lilly, IMO.

The only issue with Pis at the mo is availability; they're in short supply and people are scalping.

Yes, quite frustrating. I managed to pick up a new Pi4 4gb on eBay for 65, which is 10 over RRP...I felt I could live with that for the sake of getting my little project done, and i'm incredibly impatient.

Smallest Hi-Fi I’ve ever had…

Nice micro system! Can I ask how you are streaming through the PI? I have a pi + hifi berry and used to use as a roon end point, but I don’t use roon anymore, is there a way to stream tidal without roon? Many thanks in advance
