many ways of getting some audio around the house, for instance, just put a cheap bluetooth amp in each room and pair to it when you want, with a phone or tablet.

People are often vague about exactly what they want the system to do.

Can i ask you to take a step back and rather than describe by using a solution can you say what you would like to achieve instead.

Lots of solutions out there to meet lots of different needs.

Appreciate what you're saying on the £20 speakers, but I'm just aiming to beat clock-radios and mini systems rather than replace my hi-fi or AV systems, though obviously wanting to make the effort worthwhile, so trying to hit the right balance. I haven't looked at stand-alone Sonos or similar in detail, but they look expensive and with small speakers, so not sure I'd expect better performance or lower price for that route.
You won't get lower price, but will get better performance with something like Sonos. I guess it depends on how fussy you are, or if you're just happy with acceptable sound at moderate volume.

I did something similar about 25 years ago, by fitting ceiling speakers in the bathroom, wall mounts in the hall, and shelf speakers in the living room. They were all wired to a manual switch in the living room, connected to a hifi unit, with wiring running through the loft. This was all before the days of wireless/wifi stuff and so not many options. I've since added a bluetooth dongle to the hifi to connect a phone/tablet wirelessly. Of course there are better options available to you today.

The speakers weren't expensive, but they still work and sound fine today. One thing I will say regarding ceiling mounts, is to look at marine speakers that they install in boat cockpits, as they're available at a range of prices, from fairly cheap to expensive, are waterproof and have survived the steam in my bathroom all these years.
