Bit out of touch but looking for a large screen to put in the kids cinema room, HDR 4K to go with a new 4K HDR Blue Ray and predominantly used for that and Netflix. Going to hook it up with some old KEF Eggs I have from a previous setup and a spare Cambridge Audio Minx sub with a new basic £250 ish AV amp.

I see Richer Sounds are doing an LG for £999. ' 75 inch 4K Ultra HD HDR Smart LED TV Freeview Play'

Is there anything fundamentally missing on that? They do an HDR Blu Ray player for a couple of hundred quid and a Yamaha AMP for around £250 so for £1,500 I could be up and running with a reasonable little system?

ETA I just ran the idea past one of my sons (14) and he looked at me in disgust and said "its only 50Hz and why would you want a Blu Ray player when we can get all the latest films off I-player for a fiver"

I have no idea what any of that means.

LG for me all day. Especially as an OLED display.

I did have a Hisense last year which was a great price and picture but the smart side of it was a bit flaky........

Cant help with the TV, I prefer OLED and that will be out the question here?

4k and HDR.
HDR is a a type of data transmitted along with the 4k basic vision, there are a few options. HDR10 and Dolby Vision are the main ones. The TV will need to have a HDMI port that supports these if you want them with external inputs. (if yours is the one I think it is, no Dolby Vision but that is not an issue. HDR10 is still great)

Films. 4k Blu ray players are quite cheap and the basic ones do HDR10 however Dolby Vision costs a tad more, check when buying.

All disks hover around £20, the studios seem to be milking this. There are deals, Zavvi and Zoom for example run offers. HMV also do 2 for£x as well but the real savings are through iTunes. For that you will probably need an Apple TV though they do have an App now but I am not sure what that runs on. Obviously far cheaper using the as you don't have to buy the box.

Streaming wise Netflix does 4k OK, not the best. Apple is about the best streaming via the box. Netflix of course costs monthly for the 4k plan (top plan they do) and apple will cost you the film or TV once the box is bought. iTunes also run offers. They are tricky to find and there is an app and web site called Cheap Charts that alerts you to the deals. Instead of £20, look for the sale and perhaps pick up a top 4k with Dolby Vision and extras for a fiver. Crimes of Grimwald for 7.99 HDR10 and Dolby Vision. However there are T+C with Apple that some don't like. Namely you cannot download the 4k version, it is only ever streamed.
https://www.cheapcharts.info (Apple don't sell Disney or Marvel at 4k, most things seem to get a bump to 4k when available but it is the studios that decide that)

You need a good broadband speed to stream. Netflix 4k content is pegged at 15mb/s. Apple seems to come down the pipe 25+ mb/s.

iPlayer is BBC, they do occasional 4k but they use HLG. Another version of HDR. Not available to all models.

Anything in the path to the TV will need to pass the format you want, Amps etc. HDMI leads can be had for around 6-8 quid for a few meters. "Premium High Speed" is the correct term but it is a minefield out there. Longer runs cost more and there is a limit before you need to think of fibre.

Im also looking at a 75” tv for the garage. I was looking at the lg at £999 that you mentioned but was pretty dissapointed in the picture brightness and viewing angle. If you any distance away from the centre of the screen the picture is dark and distorted. Im looking at the sony bravia KD75XG8505BU 75” tv it is more money at £1899 but in my opinion is light years ahead in picture and sound quality. Any opinions on here about the sony? Thanks

Neither do I, aside from the fact that going for a 75” TV, may qualify you for chav of the year.

I have a Sony 75’. The 75xf8596. It cost £2300 new but should be heavily discounted by now. Excellent picture quality. Tv sound is ok but I use a sound bar with it. A big plus is all 4 hdmi ports are 4K compatible. Some TVs only have 2 of the 4 which support 4K.

I spent the weekend casing houses Viewing short term rental properties, and I was amazed by the size of normal people's tellies these days. People have 75's in the living room and the old 60's have been relegated to the bedrooms..

I think that with todays resolution possibilities, less than 55 is a waste (providing the space is available and others disagree). I can only see these getting larger and better as a norm rather than the exception.

I bow to your superior knowledge vis-a-vis size and resolution of TVs, ours is, (I think), 32”, in a very slightly larger than average living room.
We visited my wife’s brother, and he’d bought something like 50” more or less, it looked good, if a tad overpowering.
On the way home, my wife said, “Promise me that you wouldn’t even think of something like that.”

Apols, didn't mean it come across so.

Your money your choice. But I wonder how much is a throw back to the days of CRT and it is a bit built in to the psyche.

OP

My advice if there’s no movement in budget Is to prioritise, knock the Blu-ray player on the head and put the couple of hundred into the tv pot

I’d imagine £999 is right at the shallow end for 75’s, much better to downsize and go better quality if money’s an issue, or wait for a good deal on one to come along

My Samsung 65 was £2.8 but there quality is outstanding

I forgot to comment on this.

Why not ask your son how much of his pocket money he thinks it is worth contributing to get a TV that is more than 50hz.
