If you look at the NAD AV amps you can swap out the cards. I would think then all you are left with in the number of channels needed and may as tome point what to swap out caps. Also how it looks.

18 years on my Denon this year . Has been used daily (holidays excluded!) and still working 100% fine.

Home receivers can theoretically last 30-40 years based on the quality of the hardware.

Depends on your needs and pocket. I am all in viewing for 4k for a night in. With HDMI2.1 now out in the wild my wants would be Atmos and 2.1 minimum. Of course that raises issues of speakers for my system but would just have to work it in to the existing.
There are now a number of speaker manufacturers that offer little angled ones to sit on top of floor standers for atmos dutys. They point upwards and use the ceiling to reflect sound back down fo the atmos effect. KEF and Monitor Audio are two that spring to mind straightaway.

Onkyo have some for £95 and Eltax £129.
Wonder if they are worth it ?
I was going to put something on top of my current rear speakers whether a stand or something like this.

I bought an Onkyo Amp and 5.1 speakers around 2009 (£400) and it lasted 10 years with everyday use. I sold the Onkyo speakers, but they were still going strong.

It depends where you keep it. Dust and heat will be the killers, that or the Tin Whiskers.

Two or three Arcams have blown up on me in the space of a couple of years but I have now had a Meridian processor and active speakers for over ten years without any issues.

I have a slight issue, my existing cabinet space has the minimum gap for heat as per manufacturer spec. Newer amps with the bells and whistles are bigger. Without forced air cooling, I need a new cabinet grumpy

5.1 stays for the moment.

They certainly won’t be as good as direct position ones, but as an effects speaker it is a recognised (by Dolby) as a solution. Both have a reasonable reputation.

Forced Air or even just air movement can work wonders. I have been able to keep a Sky HD can liner alive for so many years in and enclosed space because it was sat on a laptop cooler - used 20-30 of them as a solution over the years.

People with old amps, are you not worried about the new HD audio stuff? I remember having an old Sony amp which was perfect but when blu rays came out I needed to get a player that had RCA outputs so I could connect to the amp as it couldn't deal with HD formats over HDMI.
Does it make much difference? The biggest difference I ever made to audio quality was living in a flat with a huge living room for a few years!

I've got an 8 year old Yamaha (forget exact model, but quite low down), but it only powers the bookshelf speakers in my home office now.

At the time I bought it, onkyo had the better features but a strong reputation for going pop! My old nad amplifier I expect will last forever in comparison!

Got to be careful though, lots on unintended consequences if you are unlucky. Though that was mainly from enclosed cabinets at work with some serious heat generation. Shifting warm air to the wrong place can get sucked into something else, leave it pooling and it can get re circulated and a fan in the wrong place or with the wrong baffles can have no effect whatsoever.

It did cross my mind to get a simple 2 inch fan or two on a strip with a duct to take the air away, all hidden from view and baffle the cabinet. That will be the problem with a new amp that would barely squeeze in the existing slot. Probably best to KISS and deal with the new amp cooling requirements as they present rather than heath robinson.

Mine feeds the 5.1 to the amp from the TV on optical, meaning whatever source I listen to on the TV, 5.1 is fed to the amp. The set up is not perfect, but it is quite acceptable.

My Yamaha DSP-A1 has just given up the ghost after 20 years. Doesn't come on, probably unfixable, and the parts are no longer available. Once I can travel again, there is a specialist in Milton Keynes who may be able to fix it.

It cost a fearful amount of money in about 2001, but I remember auditioning it using some clip of a helicopter landing in "Outbreak". All the amps had imaged the helicopter flying from left to right .... the DSP-A1 did that, and also got the tail rotor swinging across the screen as the helicopter turned as it landed.

It hasn't done home cinema duty for a while, but was doing general HiFi duty.

I had a Pioneer SC-LX56 That lasted all of two years and died with the dreaded UE22 Error. Previously it was sorted under warranty but the 2nd time was just outside of it.

The Irony was the old amp (a Denon 2805) at almost 14 years old held out until recently. Was just doing Sonos duties in the kitchen.

Went back to Denon for my 4K amp. Zero issues with it and HEOS is really useful (as I'm retiring Sonos from the house).

I ended up purchasing a Onkyo 696 in the end after speaking to Richer Sounds, couldnt decide on if i wanted the Denon @ £700 but they suggested for my needs (movies/gaming) the 696 was a better choice.

From my non-audiophile ears, the 696 is a massive improvement over my now deceased Denon. Though think it still needs tweaking sound setting wise and ill look to purchase the up-firing speakers in the future.

Regarding top mounted fan cooling, how many are required? Ive currently got 2 linked to the ps4 but would like to split it so one comes on when the ps4 is on and the other when the laptop is needed. Or do i need to add some more 2-to-1 usb convertors in? Or wont 1 be enough?

TBF i think i just overheated mine as it didnt have any airflow and nowhere for ethe heat to go.

it could have been a dodgy board i guess, as my old Onkyo of 10 years had the hdmi out die and both the Denons hdmi died, one after the other.

Plenty of airflow in my installation. Heat shouldn’t have been a problem.

It’s an AVR-W2200. It’s been pretty good until it wasn’t.
