Before the advent of stereo the groove usually went from side to side. It certainly does on the "78s" some of us can remember. There had at one time been the Diamond Disk format which used a "hill and dale" groove. My wife's cousin owns one of these rare machines.
My stepmother's 78's were played on a wind-up gramophone which used wooden needles. laugh

Fancy one of those Brennan B2’s. Not a fan of streaming as I like to own my music outright. Plus you’re tied into a subscription that if you stop you’ve got little to show for your money.
Also crap broadband struggles to even get my Apple TV to play off my iPad reliably.
Anyone got experience of these B2’s?
I bought one just before lockdown and I love it.
Was quite good timing really, we got sent home from work for a few weeks, so I managed to rip most of my 500 or so CD's. It has internet radio, Youtube, and I'm pretty sure it's compatible with Spotify (I don't use streaming services).
I've hooked it up to a small Tangent amp and some Dali speakers and I'm very happy with the way it sounds It's so convenient having all your music accessible on your phone or computer, and making playlists is as simple as dragging the tracks across.

I use the Bluetooth out function to send music upstairs or out the kitchen or if I'm out the garage I can play music on my phone using the NAS function and the VLC app.

My ownership has been very straightforward and I've not had any problems, however there is a very good google group for the B2 where you can get hints or tips and heads up if there is a software update.

Stream everything these days which suits my listening tastes, no need to listen through a whole album of filler to hear the tracks i like, hi-fi separates system, ether sold or gathering dust in the garage and replaced with sonos.

CDs and Vinyl all boxed up in the garage, must get shot of that lot.

Do charity shops sell take CDs and Vinyl, or has that gone the way of VHS cassettes.

CDs won't be worth much but I'd be surprised if they won't take them.

They generally like vinyl. Oxfam send some of their vinyl donations to a central hub where they can be assessed and sold on so they don't risk selling something that is worth a lot of money for a couple of pounds on the local high street.

Check out what you have on vinyl on eBay. May be worth way more than you think. I often buy vinyl from charity shops and car boots for 50p - £1 and sell for north of £20. Smartphone allows you to check out the value before you buy it.

What kind of music do you have in vinyl? I’m always looking to expand my vinyl collection and would take the lot if we had some common ground...

Even though my turntable is currently packed away, I still buy vinyl. Latest addition:

I've just succumed to spotify, as the mrs has it anyway its only a couple quid more per month.

Have over 1000 cds but most of my listening is done using music stored on my phone either while driving or headphones at work, and just haven't found the time to rip music in years.

I’ve only quite recently discovered streaming, using Spotify and its sort of rejuvenate my interest in listening to music.
The working from home syndrome has lost meant I can listen most days and for a good few hours too.

What it has done is got me started thinking about replacing my CD, Amp and speakers, (Arcam/ Mission) which has laid practically unused for a decade or more. Taking advantage of the wireless age and make everything smaller and neater.

The problem is I know without spending significant sums I’m going to probably take a bit of drop in quality.

If it's only a CD based system, there isn't too many wires - 2 mains kettle leads, 2 for the speakers and an interconnect...!

That's so cool, I just went online and bought it. £22.99 inc postage, quite happy with that.

It’s the speaker cables which are the issue. We’ve just today ordered a laminated floor for the lounge and the bi wired Cables are a real pain the **se. They have a very hard plastic coating and are bright purple!

Have you considered changing your speaker cable? I have just bought this, van den Hul "The Clearwater" The cable has what can be best described as a gel-coat cover - Not sure if they do it in a bi-wire, but might be worth looking.

Not sure that's the right solution for me really, upwards of £200.00 for me, for marginal gain in convenience and still quite bit of hassle from the missis.
