I’m In the process of rebuilding my basement home cinema/man cave. I did have optoma projector/av receiver etc but found it all too much of a pain in the backside so sold it all. New room will be 75” smart tv, sound bar, minimal wires one end and my DJ booth/bar the other with my technics/pioneer set up hidden under the counter.

Work so far reboarding and jointing, wall ready for smart tv.

Reference pics for what it will look like

More gentleman’s club/gin bar, the previous dedicated cinema room just wasn’t working for the family, they hated it which surprised me.

I have to say that if it was causing agro then something was wrong or missing in your setup.

Loads of systems out there, that when set up correctly just work for years on end, without have a bank busting budget.

If anyone is having these sort of issues, reach out before you give up.

And yes, even installers get it wrong, i am just reworking a 7 year old cinema room that 'has never really worked so we just used to give up' client quote, installer one of the bigger (better?) ones from london.

Thanks for that but I think I know my own house and family needs thanks.
What a strange comment, nothing in there from vex is offensive or mentioning family, hes just trying to help with proper professional advice, best you wind ur neck in Boom78.
Wind my neck in?? Are you for real?

I know my house layout better than a stranger on the internet implying I’ve done it wrong thanks.
And we’re off....

hehe

Seriously though, I really don’t know how anyone can imply my set up was wrong without knowing what I had or how it was set up. There wasn’t anything wrong apart from the family hated the layout and found the many components too complex hence why I’m switching to a big smart tv, pretty logical and simple really

For what it’s worth I think it was perfectly clear from your initial post, boom, that it was a usability/complexity type issue.

Absolutely you do, and that would be my very first question for you or anyone when looking at a either a new system or remodel.

I was merely responding to your suggestion that the original kit was a pain in the ass.

No offence or finger pointing meant at all.

I've put pictures up elsewhere of mine, but here are a couple: This is the third iteration of a home cinema room, so I learned a bit from my previous mistakes, but one of the main requirements was that the room didn't look like a branch of Richer Sounds. I also wanted the room to look like a regular living room when not in use for films, since realistically I only get to watch films on Saturday nights, during winter.

It's 7.1.4 with 2 x 15" DIY subs and only the side surround speakers visible, the rest are behind the screen or hidden in the pelmet I built round the room. The AV rack is outside of the room, under the stairs.

This is the view for day to day TV watching:

For film nights, the TV goes down on a lift, we move the ornaments and pull out the black velvet side curtains and various covers (all important to really get the best out of the JVC projector).

View of one pair of the Atmos speakers (they are 'on wall' MK Sound MP150, so a little OTT for this job, but I got a deal on their top model MPS300 for the LCR, so I recycled the MP150 rather than get gouged on selling and then replacing with something worse.

I did a lot of measuring with a program called 'REW' (which also has a simulation option I used to help with the initial planning and positions of the subs as I started with 4(!)). I've got the entire area behind the screen covered with thick Rockwool slabs. That and some in the pelmet, plus a thick rug, thick curtains and a fabric sofa really help to tame any echo.

This is the rack under the stairs:

I've got a smaller rack for my subwoofer, bass shaker amps and DSP device, you can just see it to the right of the main rack in the picture above. This was when I was assembling it:

Having the gear outside of the room ensures I've got no LEDs lighting up the screen, so the room is totally dark. The sub amps are quite noisy too, so that helps from a noise level aspect.

This is a view to the back of the room. The projector is in the pelmet behind a door:

I've got a build thread over on AVForums, but there is a lot of DIY sub building stuff and REW measurement talk on the first pages, so maybe go past that for the build and later updates:

https://www.avforums.com/threads/when-worlds-colli...

Let me know if you've got any questions I can help with and good luck. smile

Built mine in my basement back in 2005, along with an attached games room.

Started off with bare block walls and exposed ceiling joists:

Installed insulation and 2 layers of soundbloc plasterboard in the ceiling, and battened and plaster-boarded and skimmed all the walls.
Built a stud wall with doorway, AV rack/cupboard and reverse-cycle heatpump to give cooling and heating:

Built a small 'stage' at the front (just for show)

with the same detail reflected in the ceiling

speakers hidden behind columns covered with acoustically transparent black cloth

Riser build for the back row of seats (5 at the rear, 4 at the front)

Seats installed, and an SVS sub

Black carpet installed to lower half of the walls, black carpet to the floor#

I replaced the pair of blended Barco CRT projectors with a 1080p Panasonic AE-4000 some while later, after one of the Barcos bit the dust

And the gamesroom (before the track lighting went in), you can just see the door through to the cinema on the right

I had a build thread on AVForums at the time: https://www.avforums.com/threads/bens-new-cinema-r...

We viewed some very expensive villas in marbella recently (were going to rent for winter) and allot of them had cinema rooms that were built in the basement, i guess the solid construction helps deaden the noise and helps acoustics

there were some incredible set ups as you can imagine but theres no way i’d want a cinema room in a basement, i just really dislike the going underground feeling, too many horror films a guess biggrin

One did have a cinema room on highest floor though, the ‘small’ internal 8ft screen withdrew if needed into ceiling, wall dropped down and the external ‘big’ 20ft screen came up out of floor to create an outside cinema should one desire a summer viewing hehe

shame it wasnt a drive in though biggrin the one upmanship down there was something else!

Looks good, but I would have put in some nice sofas rather than cinema seats

That's the one thing I'd change if I was doing it again. I was dead set on having proper cinema seats, but they're not all that comfy after a while. Having said that we've had plenty of film parties etc where all seats are full and even had extras on bean bags in front of the front row, so having the extra capacity is nice. The air-con really does come in useful in those situations too!

Another thing I would say is that a cinemascope ratio screen really adds to the 'cinema' feel, especially if films are going to be your main type of content. Personally I think that going 16:9 is not 'cinema' enough, it's just a really big TV. That's why I went for the AE-4000 which has a motorized lens allowing Constant Image Height, where the 21:9 cinemascope ratio is physically wider than a 16:9 image.

Howard, or anyone, have you got a link to those multi coloured recessed lights?

Completely randomly on youtube yesterday having been thinking about doing the same as the OP and this pops up: https://youtu.be/8n7opDbyz-Y

Certainly a good effort and shows the fibreoptics used I think.

I'm on exactly the same path at present, using one of the spare bedrooms upstairs. Currently just thrown a sofa in and tv unit, plus my wfh desk at the mo. Only issue is there's a fitted wardrobe so to do it properly i need to find somewhere else to relocate that to get a decent rectangular room.

I use the Philips Hue system throughout my house. The ones in my cinema are the white and colour GU10s (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Ambiance-Spotlight-Bluetooth-Assistant/dp/B07SHVQCTJ) smile
