I tested one once on an all-Linn system and I could hear the difference between the analogue outputs on the Karik 2 vs the same Karik 2 using the Numerik but it wasn't necessarily "better" for me... just different... and very subtle.
It was a 'no brainer' for me.

The same shop owner then hooked up an LP12 through the Kairn, and 4x LK-somethings with the Aktiv cards installed (don't think the Klouts were out then) into a pair of Isobariks and totally blew me away. This was when CDs were in their heyday (around 1991) and vinyl seemed so 1970s but that was something else. I never had a large record collection but I did regret selling even the few I had then.

I've had a Sondek since early 1984. I'm a huge Linn fan, save for their Speakers. I always found them (aside from the Briks) a tad 'shouty'.

I’m the same as you, buying up cheap cd’s...we have over 2000.
Now scouring the ads for a Linn system. I used to walk past a linn dealer on the way to school 30 odd years ago.......
Where are you buying your CDs from? I've only (so far) managed to buy a bulk load from a colleague.

Looking at a 3rd pair of Missions and a 3rd LK100... better, or diminishing returns? I'm only looking. I think it'd be silly. But so affordable.
Hi, well I’ve collected them over 30 years but I guess the last 300 or so via Amazon many second hand.

Sorry for the thread divergence but do you buy individual CDs or collections?

I'd like to grab a house clearance job-lot... Keep what I might like and sell-om those I don't.

My first ever CD player was a Marantz CD84 in 86/87 - Think it cost nearly £500 back then... !
Paired it with a Creek CAS4040 amp and Acoustic Research AR18 speakers..
Marantz gear has always been good value for money.

I had a PM 50 amp bought in 1991, died in 2008.
About the same time as my Arcam cd deck frown

I had some AR18 speakers as well, the foamy stuff around the woofer cones turned to dust. To the dump they went.

[edit] think they were actually AR15's... it was a long time ago...

Mine was a CD50, purchased late 80s, early 90s.

Still going strong and still sounding great.

If you're going second hand, old high-end DVD players are an overlooked bargain. I paid just £28 for my Sony DVP-S725 and it sounds so detailed it's almost too good for most CDs when paired with my Grado 325s. A CD player that good would cost multiples of that, but most people type in CD player and don't give a second glance to DVD or Blu-ray players that can sound just as good, if not better than standalone systems.

Of course they don't look half as cool as the 80's gear!
