Just bought one of these, I know its not high end but we had one when I was a kid, got it in 82 and it lasted for years, I think I binned it when the tape stopped working.

Set it up, it sounds ok on FM, the tape sounds a little bit weird, any tips on sorting that ?

Also, going to connect a Bluetooth receiver to it so can use my phone on it, its in my garage but the only input is phono, any suggestions as to what I need to plug normal line level inputs in, is it "Attenuators"

Might get some better speakers or put some better drivers in.
We had exact same on early 80s too! Always thought it was great looking bit of kit. Speakers were rather pleasing design too I think. They were pretty heavy at least!
Did think I may change the speakers but they are fine, remarkable condition as well, sound fine for in my garage !

And unlike my sonos, doesn’t need an update every time it’s used.

You can't plug anything other than a turntable into the phono input. Even if you attenuate the output of the Bluetooth receiver down to the right level, the sound will be all bass and no treble due to the frequency response of the phono input, which is not flat across the frequency range.

You can get adapters to convert line level to phono - they are often used to test phono input stages without needing to rig up a turntable
Referred to as inverse riaa or anti riaa
You could make your own if you can be bothered with a handful of resistors and capacitors + Google
Or buy a ready-made unit

Got one of these on your suggestion, took a while to turn up but works like a charm !

Thanks.

Had it set up with just the BT adaptor into the Phono input and it did work but was very boomy and couldnt turn it up much but this makes it work like a normal hifi.

Sounds ok but may treat it to some different speakers.

Add a 5 disc ES CD player for the full stack…no way I can leave it like that, back in the cupboard for that!

It’s good design leaving a gap between each component so you can climb up to load the cd-changer…

Being a bloke of a certain age who grew up staring at these through the windows of certain hi-fi chains, with no disposable income but now having access to £££ and eBay is quite, quite dangerous biggrin

I picked up a Teac 500 amp years ago for use in the garage. Nice little shoebox sized amp. An hour a day for a few weeks on eBay and I added the lot. Tape deck, minidisc, tuner,CD,DVD,CD changer, 5.1 version of the amp etc.
Madness, I had no cassettes, no MD discs, the tuner was pointless as the AV amp had the same tuner built in. Sounded fine though. More importantly, it looked good (in an 80s sort-of-vibe).

Vintage knob website is full of this kind of stuff - some of it outrageous built at the peak of the Jap economy.
The Sony ‘1’ series is something I’d own just to say to myself “you have it”. SCD-1 SACD, E1 pre, couple of N1 amps just to bi-amp amd a pair of the Polk-designed and built ‘9’ series speakers.

There’s a vid on YouTube of an Aussie fanatic driving a TA-N1 70Kg monster amp with the same 100esd processor you have!

eBay is very dangerous. This started as a lock down project, I picked up the 670es amp as abit of a punt and was pretty much blown away by the build quality when it turned up so kept going! I found a Sony 1991 catalogue and tried to get as many of the ES components I could from the same era/ branding. I’m really enjoying learning all the tech, make dat and cassette mix tapes is surprisingly fun!

There was a TA-N77ES & TA-E77ESD combo which was sold recently on eBay for £2500, man I wanted that so bad but couldn’t justify it…that’s going to be my 50th present if I make it that far….

As far as I’m concerned, this was the golden age. Such a shame the UK press and dealers at the time simply wrote off the entire range as jap-crap. Comparing a £500 basic British amp with a volume control and a single input to a whole ‘midi system’ priced at £99 and using that as the basis for slagging off, in some cases, absolutely wonderful kit.

Those ‘77’ amps you mention are the type of thing I’m talking about - excellent sound and engineering wrapped in lacquered wood side cheeks. Lovely stuff. Reminds me of the contemporary gear from Marantz (94/5 series), Rotel (Michi), Yamaha (10,000 anniversary range which I’ve mentioned on here a few times) and, finally the one system I’d probably choose over the top-Yamaha system - Nakamichi Dragon. Check out the three box CD player!

Anyway, there I go again….thanks for posting the pics. The youth of today, with their Bluetooth earbud things quite literally don’t know what they’re missing.

Agree 100%. Some wonderful kit from that era, before I reassembled the ES stack I was playing around with this combo. A mash up of near contemporary British and Japanese components showing the Very different design.

Both have their own charm….sounded good as well…

Have bought some Kef Coda 3 vintage bookshelf spears to try on the Rotel Casseiver, interested to see if they are much on an improvement over the originals.

I posted this is the retro thread but I think I meant to put it here....

Vintage Hitachi HiFi System

Hi all, just wondering if anyone on here is interested in the below at all that my mum is looking to get rid of?

Its all in very (very) good condition, the Tape Cassette does not work though and the Turntable needs a new belt as seen in the pics.

Everything else is in GWO as far as I know - Speakers, Reciever and cabinet included as shown...

Would be good if it went to someone on here who will fix it up again and enjoy it!

It would need to be someone from East Anglia really as they are in Suffolk and would need to be collected.

Well, I got the KEF speakers and hooked one up and tested it, sounded alright and switched left to right to compare, definitely an improvement.

Did the right one and turned it back off, sounded a bit weird briefly and then no sound whatsoever.

Nothing on any input, have I killed it ?

Any suggestions as to how to test ? Guessing it might be output transistors or something, unit still works otherwise just no sound at all.

Don’t want to bin it.

It’s normally the output transistors that have developed a fault.

They are quite easy to replace, if you can get new versions or their equivalent.

You just need a multimeter to check for shorts or open circuits.

This might help.
