I have a possible couple of entries for this thread. First up is a Technics system I bought in the late 80s from some Technics hi fi shop in West Wickham Kent

Went in loads of times looking before deciding and buying. I still have the original receipt somewhere. Everything works apart from the CD tray which whirrs but is reluctant to emerge for loading.

One speaker cover removed to show what’s behind. Quite powerful noise is made!

I've got that exact same amp, bought in 1986 (might have been 87) and has been is on duty in the garage for the last 20 odd years.

That turntable looks familiar as well.

I've had one of those Harmony remotes sat in a drawer for about 5 years and you've just reminded me of it. I now also have a load of remotes sat on the chest which the wife hates. This evening I'll charge it up and get it working again.

Sadly Logitech decided to end of life the entire harmony range, which is a shame as they work really well.

It also means they have become quite rare and go for good money too, like this one new for £600!

I think they got it right and they were great solutions, the one I got with the hub is ace because it allows Wi-Fi control as well as IR, so best of both worlds.

I will be lost when they die of old age, I actually prefer a nice remote with buttons over using my smart phone and an app!

My old Hi Fi System now sits in its cabinet unused.
Ariston RD80SL Transcription Deck, Arcam Alpha 9 Amplifier, Marantz CD63mk2 Signature CD Player, Trio Tuner. Speakers were Wharfedale Glendale's but they were sold some years ago.
Advertising it soon but I suspect that it's a fairly limited market.

Here's my ridiculously makeshift tight arsed effort, cobbled together at zero outlay to me. Denon DRA-435R from the early 90s, with Celestion DL4s of similar vintage. They had been sitting in my garage for over 10 years (and had been given to me by a mate, gratis, back in about 1997) when along came the pandemic and WFH, which motivated me to dig them out and set them up in my home office.

Spotify/digital music in via an old android phone and its headphone jack to the amp, redundant cheapo Toshiba DVD player which had been in our bedroom and is now superceded by a smart TV) for CDs, and a cheapo turntable off Amazon which the missus bought me as a fun gift, which I'm going to replace with a decent quality one when I get a round tuit. I also put a DAB/internet radio which had been in the kitchen on it (got a Sonos downstairs for that now), and then discovered it's such a stty bit of kit that it doesn't have an aux out so is pretty pointless and is neither use nor ornament. For Radio, I use streaming from the phone.

My teenage dustbin lids were absolutely blown away at how music sounds through this amp and speakers compared to what they've grown up with. They've never heard anything so loud.

My dad has lovely Naim 2-part amp and a Denon CD player, neither used now.

I will take some photos when I next visit, which will probably be Christmas.

If anyone wants to ship a pair of vintage speakers 1500 miles across country, speak to me for hints and tips. I've been looking for a pair of B&W DM6 for some time. I found a set in Philadelphia area , but I could not figure out how to ship them to Dallas. The seller was not interested in taking them to a shipping station which is understandable because they weigh 85lbs each. After a few months, I saw that he relisted the speakers on ebay and I told him that I'd buy it and will figure the shipping myself within 30 days, fully expecting that if I don't, I'll lose them.

He agreed and I paid him. A asked couple of local friends if they could help and they were gung ho until they weren't so I flew up to Philly myself, rented a minivan. I drove 2 hours to pick them up and met with the owner. He was super nice guy. He said that he bought them in 1978 when he was 25. They're a matching pair with sequential #'s and he really took care them. He also threw in some sales brochures , a spare tweeter and some fabric to re-cover the speaker grills. We ended up doing another deal on a pair of DM5 bookshelf speakers while I was there.

He was super sad to see them go but as he was now 70 years old, he was looking to move into a smaller place and wanted a good home for them which they now have. I was able to find a freight company that was willing to ship them if i got them crated and on a pallet. I couldn't get a crate so the next best thing is these huge 70 gallon totes which I bought from the hardware store, along with some R22 insulation. The guys at the hardware store were super cool when I told them what I was doing and let me have a pallet. Once on the pallet, I could strap them down witch ratcheting straps and I was confident they weren't going anywhere.

Next was to stop off at a friends house where we packed everything and loaded into the mini van and off to the freight company who added some extra shrink wrap and took them away.

We've had storms in Texas and I've been sweating bullets that these speakers would arrived damaged, but fortunately they arrived in good shape and I'm pretty happy with the result.

It helps them go up to 11

Anyone else thinking of that 1980's film "Ruthless People" with Danny DeVito and Bette Middler, and one of the nice kidnappers is a hi-fi salesman

(It's the huge one at the end I was referring to from 1:29 onwards, not the Dominator X-1. I didn't mean to imply that the OP was the guy in the Ferrari jacket)

On topic now - My hi-fi isn't exactly vintage though - Marantz CD6004 & PM6004 amp from 2013 and Monitor Audio Bronze 5 Floor standing loudspeakers.....! smile
It's crazy isn't it. Early 90s CFs were £12-£14, which can't be far away from being £30-£40 now.

Office has some Kef 104s, connected to a Yamaha receiver, Cambridge Audio 540r CD player, the PC and a Chinese valve Bluetooth receiver.

Living room nearly has Kef C60s connected to a Yamaha RX-V673 network receiver, with the PS3 for CD and Android TV box for casting as inputs (receiver will be networked, so will see how much it lets me do from my phone!. This might get some gale gold monitors for surround sound in time.

My first thought was ‘Silent Running’.

You need to call them ‘Huey’ and ‘Dewey’ OP. ‘Louie’ didn’t make it frown

Which is what some vinyl records now cost... as it's "cool" again!

I was in a local charity shop which had a JVC AX-4 amp in there. My first amp was an AX-1 so was nostalgic.

The AX-4 had a graphic equaliser as well as tone controls which seemed overkill to me but all the rage at the time I guess.

It was £50; too much for me to spend on a novelty given I already have too much gear.

A good starting point is to check the grease on the slide rail and gears, as this tends to go hard and sticky over time. Clean with IPA (but don't use IPA on the laser lens). Then regrease with white lithium grease.
How best to clean a laser lens? Considering the thing appears to work I should probably resist the urge to meddle?

If it's working ok my advice is to leave it alone.

In case I missed it - what CD player is it?

Resurrecting Dad's Technics SL-P555 (for use with my contemporary Sony amplifier). I'm going to clean and lubricate the tray mechanism and I've got a new belt on the way. I had it playing at the weekend though and all appears to be well with the way it reads.

Internet seems to fancy it as a pretty decent player. Class AA & MASH. It's missing a foot, and it's remote unfortunately. Keeping an eye out for a foot.

The 555 is a decent player. It uses an obsolete laser (SOAD70A) and if it's working I'd leave it alone for now.
