So back in the days of CRT TVs, most people had screens around the 20" mark. I always reckoned if you're going to watch TV, admit it and get the biggest one you can. I think the biggest CRT I found was 28" and it was a beast. Most people thought I was mad, "why do you need a TV that big" " I hope you've got a really big room to put it in". These days I have 43" and I'm quite happy, while all the people who used to have 14" portables as their main TV now have a video wall half the size of their house. Don't quite get it.
Big CRT was huge money at the time and with the interlacing rate wasn't a fabulous idea for picture quality.
We had a 29" Sony CRT which I won in a work competition. Everyone who saw it commented on how good the picture was. It was guaranteed for 5yrs and tube went just under 5yrs old and they put a new one in.

Then got a 37" Panny plasma which was also brilliant. That died last year.

Current is 49" Sony LCD. Our living room is 19' x 15' and it's not far off corner to corner from TV to where we sit but it's taken me a year to get used to the size of it.

One thing I don't like is the sound seems to come from somewhere other than the lips of person speaking. Bought a Sonos Beam, which is better but it still bugs me. I can only imagine that'd be worse on a massive TV.
Back in 2000 we bought a Panasonic widescreen CRT - it was a 36" screen, the thing was huge and weighed about 80Kg. The picture was absolutely superb with 100Hz scanning, and the best available at the time - there were only 2 others in that size at the time, a Sony and a Toshiba. We compared all 3 side by side in the same shop with the same DVD source material and as we were only interested in picture quality, the Panasonic won out. We kept it for 12 years then gave it to my FiL who happily continued to use it for a further 7 years until he passed away. It was still working perfectly after 19 years.

In 2012 we switched to a 55" Panasonic plasma (55VT50) so pretty much top for picture quality. When it was delivered the screen looked huge, but after a couple of weeks, we were thinking that maybe we should have spent the extra for the 65" version. The picture quality for films (including 3D) was brilliant. We're still very happy with the picture quality and it's still working fine just over 8 years later, although it now mainly gets used just for general TV watching. When it does eventually get replaced, it'll most likely be with an OLED.

2 years ago we went for our first projector (Benq W1210ST). The electric screen drops down just in front of the TV and the image is the equivalent of a 110" screen. This now is the default option for films (including 3D) and most sports. Again, very happy with the picture quality, and it has a fast response time so also works very well for games.

In all the above cases, the sound has been the same 5.1 surround system comprising a (now 20 year old) Yamaha DSP800 processor driving Mission centre and 2 x Mission rear satellite speakers, with line-level output into a stereo hifi amp driving front left and right speakers (Spendor S6e), and the .1 channel output to an active sub (REL Strata3).

Finally, viewing distance in all the above has been approx 3 metres, which many may consider to be very close (especially for the projector), but we both get on fine with it. We do tend to sit in the middle or slightly closer to the screen when going to the cinema (those were the days)!

ETA - the CRT was SD, the Plasma and projector are both 1080p which works fine and even at 3 metres viewing distance for the 110" projector screen, you cannot discern individual pixels - need to be 2 metres or closer to do so.

100” in the lounge. View it everyday, behind the screen is my 75” 4K Sony for when it’s too light in the daytime. When the Sony is on it just looks tiny now. wink

Lounge is 5m x 4m

37” Panasonic Plasma here too, I’ll be sad when it dies as I haven’t seen a better picture.

We have a patio door to the right which has a nice view out hence the sofa to the left. This lets a lot of light in which makes the projector image washed out and is why I’ve kept the Sony.
Also have two rear speakers behind as well as two ceiling speakers. The sky Q / amp is all remote in separate room controlled by a harmony remote.
Mrs bishbosh is very understanding. Secretly I think she likes the films too.

Anyway. Enough of that, go big OP....

75 inch in the lounge which is about right as my sofa is 19' from it, could perhaps go a bit bigger but they are insane prices.

What was a huge mistake was the idea of having a 55" on the wall about 2' from the end of the bed, my evening ritual now consists of suntan lotion and sunglasses before I retire.

Not had a television for over 10 years now. Once we got the projector we found we just weren’t using the TV. We don’t watch casual television and rarely during the day anyway so a projector fitted in with our lifestyle perfectly.

86” fixed screen. Having it white when off (rather than shiny black) made all the difference to us.

That's a good move, and I should have done the same. I've got a 100" motorised projector screen that rolls down in front of a 65" TV.

The TV is a recent LG OLED so the picture is a lot better than the projector can muster, and it can be used in all lighting conditions, but we only ever use the projector. We don't really watch day-to-day TV programmes, so it is mainly movies and sport which lend themselves to the bigger screen anyway.

The TV only gets used occasionally for gaming where I'm happy to sit a bit closer to the screen to gain the better picture quality and retain most of the immersion of the bigger screen.

Sitting room has a 65” curved Samsung LED.

It was top prize in a raffle at a charity dinner. Most expensive thing I have ever won (new it was £4000), though it did take 12 months of chasing (and escalation to the Dixons group commercial director) for it finally to be delivered.

We’re quite happy with the size, though once we have had a loft conversion done and move a couple of bedrooms upstairs (bungalow), the plan is that one of the freed up downstairs rooms will become a music/movies room. So we might move it in there (along with a projector) and then downsize to a 55 in the sitting room for general watching.

Find a 65” with proper sound more cinematic than 85” with some crappy sound bar

Proper sound as in a dynamic sound system with a real sub

"We"?

Surely you're single with a setup like that? biggrin

(Fair play. I only just "squeezed" in a 55" OLED in a room 6m x 5m or so smile Though the photos on here now have me thinking that I could move it round a bit to make some space smile)

49" LED in the living room, 50" plasma on the bedroom wall. Would have gone bigger, but 99% of the TVs out there now are designed to be wall-mounted (really didn't want to risk it with a red hot stove 18" below it) and have feet at both ends instead of a centre stand. The TV sits on a dresser in the alcove on one side of the chimney breast, and I've 5mm on each side of the feet so any bigger and it would need to find a new home, and possibly a more pronounced slant angle to be actually able to see it. Also, the joys of a 150-year old farmhouse with walls three feet thick making the rooms funny shapes and sizes! The plasma upstairs is mainly just for playing Xbox etc, not disturbing other people. Haven't watched TV on it ever.
Just about every TV sold has VESA mounting points on the back so you can ditch the feet at the ends & use a table mount stand like one of these:

I always buy cheap vesa table top stands as I hate the stands TVs come with.
Usually big gaps at the bottom so you see cables etc.

Or they are just the wrong height, why do I want the TV to be 80mm or so above the table it is sat on?

The gaps always seem too high for no soundbar and too low for a soundbar.

This is a Sony XF9005....

Compared to the bizarre looking stand it comes with...

Never come across one of those before. Great idea, as the wall mount goes onto the same bolts I suppose. When the current unit goes bang I think they will be on the list!
