Yes, I’m a bot. Isn’t it obvious from the style of that post? Clearly bot-generated. Us bots love watching television. Especially the HD stuff. That’s the real sweet spot for our cameras. Maybe because they’re HD. Hopefully when mine gets upgraded to 4K I’ll appreciate 4K displays better.

As you’re apparently unaware, the forums have a weird little wrinkle which can generate double posts. I’m not entirely sure how, but I think it’s caused by posting on a phone or tablet and leaving the browser window open, then coming back to that window. The coming back to it generates the second post. I haven’t had the energy to play around to find out precisely the mechanism though, because I’m too busy with my other bot-jobs.

So there you go. Consider yourself better educated. And because I’m a bot I won’t even send you a bill. But even us bots sure do appreciate the occasion “sorry” and “thank you”.

Still using my Panasonic Viera tx-p42 that I bought new in the mid 2000’s. Still very happy with the picture quality. Some comments on here about running costs, so thought I’d work it out. 295 watts consumption works out at 10.3 pence per hour. As it’s turned on for about 5 hours a week, I can live with that.

That doesn't detract from my observation though. There is immense pressure to upgrade to something "greener" with no thought given to the cost of creating the new thing and the cost of safely disposing of the old thing.

I've had my current TV the longest I've ever owned one, 15 years, I've owned my current car 13 years. Plenty of people do consider every aspect of our purchase choices.

I'm not sure that I deserve your harsh words here because I was actually praising people such as yourself and you seem to have got the wrong end of the stick.

I missed this one, still running a Panasonic TX-P42G20B as the only TV in the house, heating and television from one unit makes it more cost effective right?

I upgraded from a Toshiba 36" CRT in 2010 IIRC.

The plasma can't compete with the fakery of an in-store 8K demo but does a great job day to day.

Energy savings are not like for like. My 42" Plasma uses about the same energy as a 65" OLED.

Thanks for the suggestions. Finished up with a LG 55" G2 to replace my Panasonic plasma that went bang. My wife preferred the slimmer look over the C2 and for only £100 more it seemed well worth it (£100 off in Curry's). Just nailed it to the wall and initial impressions are very good.

I'd hoped the broken TV might be worth a little for parts, but a quick look on eBay suggests the remote controller may be worth more!

My new OLED LGC2 arrived yesterday late afternoon, so got it up and running and started to work through what needs what etc.

So far really impressed with it. I've got it setup to my Sky Q UHD box and using my 2008 spec combined surround sound system and DVD player using the SKY box optical audio out to provide sound.

Looking at info online, some UHD content doesn't work fully on the SKY platform, like on BBC iplayer, but does via the smart apps on the TV, so I've set that up on the TV app and have ordered a 3 in 1 out optical audio splitter box, so can use the TV optical out audio when using the TV apps to provide sound.

As the TV is much bigger than previous, 37" plasma to 55" OLED i can see the low definition quality issues more, but that seems more down to the quality of the filming at the time, rather than the TV type itself. For example watching Kiley on BBC2 HD last night her early song footage on TOTP was crap compared to her late stuff.

HDR is amazing on this TV.

Do our old plasmas have any resale value or are they essentially worthless?

I only ask because Samsung are currently running a trade-in deal not dissimilar to the old government car scrappage scheme. In other words they will give you a discount and take your old telly away for free. Only caveat is that you need to dismount it from the wall yourself and "make it available" for collection when they deliver the new one.

Currently the Samsung 55" S95B QD OLED 4K Quantum HDR Smart TV (2022) is £1,399 with free delivery, with £300 off when you recycle your old TV, making it £1,099

(the 65" version is £1,999)
