Have you heard 5th House by Dominic Miller? One of my 'go to' albums....

There are also some great albums by Manu Katché - Third Round in particular.
I haven't, thanks. That's the great thing about this thread, I'm listening to music I would never otherwise have come across.

I don't understand how some productions sound great and other sounds bad.

Take the example of 2 albums by the same band, same studio, same producer recorded only 18 months apart...

If you listen Ghost in the machine by The Police and then follow it up with Synchronicity then I notice a real step down in quality.

Anything by Alan Parsons (whether Alan Parsons Project or engineered by AP - Dark Side Of The Moon for instance)
Anything by Jellyfish (sadly only two albums)
Anything by created or re-mixed Steven Wilson (his own material is variable but the production is fantastic)
As others have said, Steely Dan or anything else that has Donald Fagen's obsessive fingers on it.
I've just had the final part of a £1.5k upgrade to my car audio done and almost immediately went to Fagan's New Fontier from his Nightfly album. Amazing production. The album was a vinyl staple demo in hifi shops in the early/mid 80s
Can you upgrade modern car audio systems? I thought with modern integrated headsets upgrading wasn't really a thing anymore

Yes, although modern car OEM system often sound much better than old ones did.

You can use different drivers and amplifiers, add sub-woofers, sound deadening, upgrade wiring etc.

It is alchemy!

I owned a recording studio for many years - semi pro... fully equipped live room and control room etc. Production is a dark art, I never really mastered it to be honest... it's a Rubik's Cube of variables - not just EQ, panning, reverb. I am in awe of people like Bob Ludwig (for example) where everything he masters/produces is gold.

The difference between good and mediocre (as you know) is vast - hence this thread. smile

I did a Quick bit of A/B play back of these yesterday. To me they sound quite similar. Similarly very good too.

Whilst avoiding the obvious audiophile labels I am extremely impressed with Christy Moore - Live at the Point.

I cannot fault the production.

They were mentioned earlier, but I have been listening to The Eagles in the car on a trip around France.

Even through a modest car system (plus small subwoofer) bluetoothed from high bit rate Spotify downloads they sound really good.

Ps. Thinking about it, I will try plugging in to the car usb to see if it improves sound.

I remember that my local HiFi dealer used to use Automatic For The people by REM to demo systems.

Can't vouch for the quality as I had it on cassette tape, but it sounded great in the shop!

The album Moonstruck by Chris Jones is well recorded... not exactly my kind of music (a bit country/folk) but it's very well done. The acoustic guitar is very well recorded with some big bass notes coming through on my new sub! smile

Sad to read that the artist died aged only 46.

Indeed, Chris Jones was one of the recommendations early on in the thread!

To give your new sub a workout, fire up the live version of Hotel California from the Eagles' Hell Freezes Over; the when the percussion kicks in it sounds immense.

Must have missed it - or, more likely, my memory failed.

Will check out the Eagles, I do have the album, but haven't listened to it for a while.

I am just about to drive from Normandy to Marseille (via Vichy) and was seeking inspiration for music for the long journey. Eagles it is! Thank you.

Supertramp - Crime of the Century is one of my top 10 albums ever!

The Man I The Long Black Coat - Bob Dylan. Not ordinarily a fan but brilliant track steeped in atmosphere. What a recording!

I am a fan and was pleased to learn recently that the 1978 Street Legal album was remastered in 1999 by Don DeVito and released in 2003. I bought it recently and it's like night and day compared to the original recording.

It doesn't belong in this thread as it's not as good as many mentioned here, but thought I'd mention it if there are Dylan fans amongst us!

Flight of the Cosmic Hippo (title track) by Béla Fleck will get subs wobbling!

Quite an interesting album overall - a mix of jazz and bluegrass.

I find this thread fascinating, thank you all for contributing.

Has anyone put the tracks into a shareable Spotify playlist?

I'm about to do it but I thought I would check first.......

I know Spotify might not be the best but its what I have so please don't judge!

Thank you again

I know there are such lists on the high resolution sites such as Qobuz and Tidal, not sure about Spotify.
