and fancy an upgrade budget of £400 or so, what does the group recommend?

I would go for a set of used Linn Kabers. I have a pair and think they are brilliant. They can be picked up for £400-500 now.

Which amplifier do you have, as you need something fairly powerful to run them.

Alternatively, how about a set of Quad Electrostatics? You'll need a big room though.

buy used with your budget, and it depends on the rest of the system. Index are still pretty good speaker with the proper stands.

Speakers might not be the way to go, what about the source?

I run a Yamaha tuner/amp combo, it has 5.1 surround also and a Yamaha bass unit, which does add some depth.
