Region codes DVD and Blu-ray

1) Yes Richer Sounds make multi region Blu-Ray players. I have just picked up a multi region Panasonic BD35 from them, which is multi region for DVD only.
2) As for Blu-Ray, I guess so, but I also think there is a difference in the type of laser they use. I'm sure somebody will be along soon to clear it up.

4) To keep the release dates on DVD in sync with the DVD release dates. Stuff in the US tends to be released earlier then here, which means they will be on DVD sooner, which might stop people going to the cinema. Also, with the exchange rate being as it was, the US DVD's were a lot cheaper then here. Both arguments are fairly moot in opinion at the moment.

There are three BluRay Regions A, B and C. At present all BR players are fixed to a single region (region B for Europe), however many discs are not region encoded and therefore will play on any player.
It appears that most (if not all) BR players can be made multi-region with regard to DVDs, though many are single region at the point of purchase.
So it's not quite straighforward.....
