Following the thread about Sky+...

I have a 25" Sony Nicam Stereo CRT television that I bought new in 1990. In about 1998 it developed a minor problem and I got it fixed for £25. It still works as well now as it did when new. I don't have Sky, Freesat aor anything else because I object to paying for a TV licence and then paying again to watch something. I have a Freeview box but it's almost never used because even if it doesn't need 'rebooting' the channels seem to be repeats and adverts. BBC3 and BBC4 are never transmitting and the only useful channel, UKTV history, has been replaced by the Top Gear Repeat Channel (I like Top Gear, but it does grate after a while).

As for the TV listings, after the first 5 'proper' channels, all the new toy ones are in microscopic print and jumbled up, so that apart from 'Ch.548 Nickelodeon 97.5FM 472' I really can't be bothered to trawl through three pages of microprint just to see that I can't watch something because it's on an 'extra-cost' channel.

When the Sony finally blows up, if indeed it ever does, then I'll get an LCD 'crop-top' (16:9) telly with Freeview built in so that I might be able to watch the Top Gear Repeat Channel without getting up and standing with my finger on the button for 15 secs waiting for the light to go orange. But until it does, I'm really quite happy with 5 analogue channels biggrin

Digital schmigital.

Hear, hear.

We've got a nice big Sony Trinitron, widescreen, CRT, 10 years old it is but shows no sign of breaking. We get our digital from Sky, I have less than no interest in HD for the sake of it and I see no reason to change it.

Besides, the chuffing thing weighs a ton so noone's going to nick it.

The elephant in the room of 'freeview' is of course the horrific encoding used to cram all the channels in for as little cost as possible. I believe 1-5 have to maintain a minimum encoding level (standing still is progress then wink) but try watching rugby/football on ITV4 or similar yuck

4 analogue channels? There's only 2 both from the British Broadcasting Company. I thought they only transmitted the others in areas with council houses wink

(East Anglia) Switchover overview: Thursday 30th June 2011: BBC One C62 closes. BBC Two C55 closes. ITV-1 C59 closes. Channel 4 C65 closes. FIVE C52 closes.

Enjoy your analogue channels while they last wink

Maybe some cheer though:

Freeview power increase from 6,667 W to 100,000 W, 16 times stronger.

This television malarky? I understand it is akin to a wireless with pictures?

Yes. Though it'll never catch on. The same effect whilst listening to your weekly dose of the archers can be achieved simply by looking at a photo of a cow.

Simpo's right about the feckless nature of Freeview boxes. I'm certainly pleased that I have one separate to my LCD; I wouldn't want to be replacing TVs (with built-in Freeview) as often as I do Freeview boxes!

BBC 1 was THE channel to uphold standards and promote the empire. Sadly now it's all Eastenders and other ratings-dazzled trash. Programmes which might actually increase my knowledge are now scarce but usually on BBC2 (Dr Alice Jones last night for example, at which point I might afford myself a small 'phwoar'), or Ch4 or Ch5. 'Tis a great pity that channels such as National Geographic and Discovery are but small printed thumbnails for me, but hell will freeze over before I had over £15 sovs a month extra (and they're probably all adverts anyway)

And yes, eventually analogue channels will be closed down under the pretence of 'progress', and then HM Govt will have enough bandwidth to introduce road pricing and speed control by satellite, which is what the whole change to digital is really all about.

BBC4 is excellent, when it is on. If you want a good TV listings mag then buy the Daily Mail on Saturday, you also get a newspaper which is aimed at old middle class gits.
