Justin and Deva. Thanks for that.

I'm not getting shirty with Comet and I'm following their procedures. I called their Help Centre and logged a call on Thursday and they are sending an Engineer out today to have a look.

If he can fix it on the spot then that would be great.

My problem is with the possible ramifications if they insist the TV has to go for repair.

Google is awash with Comet horror stories of people losing their TV's for months.

This is what I wish to avoid if possible. Especially as I have only had it 28 days !

That's cool and the best thing to do.

If you mentioned it on Thursday and there is someone today that is someone there within 2 working days.

If it is something major you will most likely find that they just replace it. The major parts probably cost to fit what the TV costs. The best thing to do is be nice to them, but firmly explain that you would like a swift solution.

Quoting the SOGA will not bring that and only divert that down a one-way alley. People on customer care and technical desks would much rather help someone who is super-nice and give them what they want rather than someone mis-quoting the law who still wouldn't be happy even if they did pull out all the stops possible.

The law does want tidying up though. For example pretty well everywhere else in Europe all consumer goods have a 2 year guarantee, but that EU requirement has never been enacted into UK law. (Downside is that car warranties are only 2 years in most other places).

Enforcing your rights is difficult / impossible - it's really not practicable to be without some item of consumer equipment, particularly something like a washing machine or fridge while the retailer drags their heels.

The Government is looking at this whole area - a review is in progress, but they have other issues to be getting on with at the moment.

If long manufacture guarantees come in to law, expect prices to increase. The demand for cheap electricals mean products are being built for less.

You know the old saying? "Not built like they used to be", well manufactures will have to build the equipment better which means the cost price will go up, thus the trade price to the retailer goes up, and then the retail prices to us! We can't have it both ways, I suppose.

UPDATE !

OK The Engineer arrived this afternoon. Top bloke. He spent about 30 mins testing the TV before coming to the conclusion that the Main Board was US.

He called the main office or whatever and told them in no uncertain terms to replace the TV.

He must have had some slaver from the guy on the other end about the 28 days because he said 3 times louder and louder 'It's in the 28 day period' !!! I have a feeling that the Engineer didnt enjoy talking to whoever he was talking to on the phone.....

Anyway result. We're having another TV delivered to the local branch for pickup.

Thanks for all your help guys !

True :-)

I have the feeling though that if it had not been a 'Veteran' Engineer the result may have not been so happy.....

In my experience most field engineers are decent guys. They are the ones you want on your side smile

A good result, one that shows that immediately hitting the nuclear button isn't the best solution.
