For my AV set-up i'm running Naim power amps with QED X-Tube 400 speaker wire. On the fronts the right speaker is approx. twice the distance from the Amp than the left/centre speaker. Is it ok to have odd lengths of speaker wire, like 5m,5m,10m for left/centre/right channels? The Naim documentation says "burn in hell", but I can obviously set the delays to compensate for the odd lengths.

How long does the signal take to go 5m?

How long does the signal take to go 10m?

Seriously. wink

Are you *sure* you could hear that difference?

I'd rather have the right length of wire than equal lengths with one coiled up.

It's not the timing difference I was concerned about (that can be adjusted through the amp, even if I could hear it), but the continued resistance load difference due to variation in length of the speaker wire. Again Naim imply i'm going to Hell, didn't are about it before, and the speaker wire ain't cheap (more importantly)!!!!

On the setups that I have had, now is the first time I have had matched cable on the front pair.

Off the top of my head, my old setup was 6m and 3m of Nordost Red Dawn - and I really couldn't tell the difference. However, that was with a big Chord amp and Nordost cable is not physically weighty.

I would run a test if you can.

I guess techincally yes, there is going to be an impedence different. Whether or not you can actually hear that though is a different question.

I dont think there is going to be a noticeable difference between a 5m and 10m cable, especially if its being corrected by the source. Does this take impedence into consideration as well as distance?

Maybe if it was 1m vs 100m you'd hear a change.

Id say its more important not to coil your wires and use the same for all speakers.

Maybe it's my OCD kicking in, but I have to have my cables the same length. I am sure I cannot hear the difference, but whenever my settup has meant odd length speaker cables I have tried it first, but it keeps nagging away in my head, so much so I have to change to equal length cables!!!
