Just trying to sort out a new home cinema/hifi query.
I'm looking at the Wharfedale Vardus 400 floorstanders,to go with my hifi seperates.There is also a good deal on Wharfedale Diamond surround speakers,with the Onkyo 307 AV receiver.Is there any way I can use the two floorstanders in one instance as pure stereo,using the CD/amp seperates,whilst also being able to use them integrated in a surround system using a seperate AV receiver plus rear surrounds/centre/and possibly sub.

QED make a variety of switch boxes, but I'd be wary of throwing the switch if either of the amplifiers is powered up.

Why not take a L-R preout from the Onkyo and feed them into your existing hifi amp aux input. Then set the volume on the hifi amp to 12 o'clock and re-calibrate all the surround outputs on the Onkyo to compensate. That way you always have tyhe better quality amplifer driving your Left and Right speakers.

If your hifi amp has a unity gain input use that instead, and then you don't need to set the volume control

If you do that, do you not limit your stereo ability to the performance of the AV pre-amp? i.e. that will always be the weak link in the chain?

Thats something I'll look into David.UltraViolent,that is exactly what I'm worried about.This is solely about aesthetics,ie:two floorstanders each side of the fireplace,and two front surrounds on stands at the side of them may look a little cluttered.If there is no way to do it without losing stereo sound quality,I'll just have to use totally seperate speakers.(The main problem,in all honesty,is SWMBO doesn't want the room to look like a hifi shop).

No because you are still feeding your usual sources into the stereo amp, only when it is in AV mode do you use the AV Receiver as a pre-amp for L-R channels.

eg

CD -> HiFi Amp -> L-R Speakers

DVD -> AV Receiver (Pre-out) -> HiFi Amp -> L-R Speakers
-> AV Receiver (other channles) -> Surround Speakers

Does that help?

Ah, sorry, I thought the AV amp was doing source select as well.
