Getting so confused. Just a few years ago I paid over £3.500 for a 42" Sony Plasma which is now really outdated. I now want to consider replacing it with a 50' but would like something that will not be obsolete just after opening the box.
HD, Blue Ray, Plasma, LED, 3D!!!!! All these terms mean little to me. All I want is the best possible picture and sound quality at a sensible price. I am not interested in picture in picture, freeze picture etc etc.
I am not into gadgets just good quality. Some research suggests Panasonic or LG, possibly Pioneer. Maybe Sony again or are they overrated?
Any suggestions?

Just my humble oponion; Panasonic or Sony. Just had a Panasonic TX-P46G15(Plasma) delivered and i can honestly say it is a brilliant TV. Make sure your room is big enough in relation to screen size, ie: 46" you need to be sat about a good 10'+ away. For an avarage size room a 40 or 42 would be plenty.

Lady T, if you've the wherewithal to put similar funds again into a TV, then you really ought to seriously consider the Pioneer KURO 50" whilst there are some still about.
If not, then the next level down - and it's not that much of a drop really - would be the like of the Panasonic 50V10.

Opinion is quite divided on LCD v plasma. (forget LED for the mo it's just a jazzed up LCD with misleading marketing)

Generally plasmas are seen as king by the hardcore movie/home cinema crowd, pioneer are pretty much top of the pile but they're being discontinued, panasonic is what you're looking at today (still very good IMO.)

LCD's are brighter and therefore worth considering if you view a lot of telly in brightly lit room.

Forget 3D, it'll be a few years at least before anythings on the market and it's looking odds on for another big format war, and there may never be the demand for it IMO.

You will not do better than a Pioneer KRP-500a, as an alternative there is the Sony 52Z5500 LCD and the Panasonic TX-P50V10 but the Pio is leagues ahead IMO.

Why is that? I have a Pioneer pre-Kuro 50" I was going to update someday with the same brand.

I think they weren't shifting them in a decent enough quantities, credit crunch and all that and they wanted to streamline the business, pioneer may have made the best plasmas but lets face the writings probably on the wall for plasma with techs like OLED etc in the pipeline.

If you can find one, then a Kuro 5090 or one of the KRP screens.

Nothing comes close, although the £5k panasonic VX is supposed to be excellent.

Blimey you did well to find the Panasonic

It was actually my first choice however couldnt get my hands on one anywhere
Not even the local Panny shop would give me a delivery date this side of Christmas

The 10th or so dealer I tried offered me the Kuro as a cancelled order - I hadnt even considered that there would be any locally until this point so snatched his arm off

VX is the Custom Install screen.

Z1 is a consumer product.

Just put the new Star Trek Blu-ray on the Philips 56PFL9954.

I'm sorry but it's truly astonishing.

Ah yes, but you need to have eyes on stalks to watch that screen wink Wonder if this format will catch on? If so that will infuriate those that have just 'invested' in 16:9.

Thank God for projectors and scalers!
