Having just bought myself an Onkyo AV reciever to replace my ageing all in one surround sound DVD system, I've got it home to discover that the output for the subwoofer is intended for a powered subwoofer. I'm using the speakers from my old panasonic 5.1 system, and the sub is a 6ohm 60w passive unit. What kind of amplifier am I going to need for this? Presumably I can get something fairly cheap rather than having to replace the sub or even the AV reciever.

You'd be best off replacing the sub all things considered.

Yep, get an Active Sub - plenty of them out there - What HiFi is your friend so far as deciding which is right for you.

In the meantime, if you have a spare old stereo amp with RCA inputs, then you could connect the sub output of your new Onkyo to any line level input on the old stereo amp (not phono though as it's meant for very low levels from a turntable). Then connect the sub to the speaker output of the stereo amp. Obviously you will need to use the same channel in and out, so left input use the left speaker output. Balance the levels using the stereo amp volume level/Onkyo's sub level control.

Longer term (once your wallet recovers) have a look on this website for a decent sub at direct prices (I have the XLS200 and a Monolith myself):

Yeah, I'm trying to build up cheaply. Are there any cheapish amps I could use for the time being? PResumably as it's the sub it doesn;t need to be as good quality as you'd want on one of the other speakers.

Quite impressed with the Onkyo's audio calibration system using a microphone to set up the speakers for where you sit.

The cheapest stereo amp I can find in RicherSounds is £50, so probably a bit of a waste of money for you if you'll be buying a better active sub later on. Considering their cheapest active sub is £80 then you're over half way there (not that I'd recommend their cheapest sub, but comparing based purely on cost here). Maybe better just to manage without for now and save up for a sub (keep your eyes open on the AVForums classifieds or Ebay maybe?

as a starter, why not just get something like this?

Click me

I have used one of these with my current setup and it was good enough to get you started.

Behind the centre the sub is the most important speaker in the array.

I bet my Dads, uncles sisters step dads sons bass would blow yours too wink

It was a joke, nothing to do with the guys budget! But back to being serious why waste money on something which is not upto the task. False economy IMO save up that's what I do.

Fair enough, jumped to conclusions I suppose as there wasn't a smilie. If I could fart as loud as your brother's, dad's sister's sub then I'd need some major surgery afterwards I think! At times the Monolith has nearly caused loss of bowel control as it is smile .

It's just a temporary fix as I think the OP has no sub at all after his upgrade and the satellites probably sound really tinny without any kind of sub to support them, hence the low budget suggestions just to keep him going while he saves up.

Me...I'm still after an SVS sub but they stopped selling the donwfiring ones and the Monolith just passes as a handy table without looking like an oversized speaker or a black wooly tower. If anyone knows of an Oak downfiring SVS sub, let me know.

Yeah, I'm thining a low budget solution to get a sub running for now, and then probbaly replace the set of speakers with something better in the future. Doesn't sound too bad at the moment though, which is suprising with the lack of sub.
