I have had Sky calling me up and requesting that the box be plugged back in again as i was contractually obliged to do so.
After moaning a bit and I did plug it back in for a week or so and they didn't call back again after that.

Just to clear some things up:

You ONLY need the phoneline connected when pairing your card and box - it can be removed as soon as the engineer has gone (so no need to run under the carpet etc)

The phoneline connection is ONLY needed for box office and the interactive stuff. Keep the phoneline in a cupboard and plug it in as and when you need to use it.

Sky won't care about the phoneline connection unless you have multiroom - then they use it to prove both your boxes are at the same premises
Err, should have mentioned in my original post it WAS a "multiroom" installation......Perhaps I do need to have a connection then?

Also does the "second set" have to be connected up to a phone line, because the engineer just left the lead from the back of the "original" sky box loose on the floor.....

Also, been reading this:-

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?...
I had multiroom and Sky said I needed it hooked to a phone line. The new area of the osue the sky was going to had a phone line, so no problem......until installation and Skyman notices it was a different phone number to the main house...., (ie a seperate line)! What they should tell you is it needs to be on the SAME phone line as the main box, of course to stop neighbours getting it cheap no doubt, but in my case it was just going into my office at my home! Was apain to have to run a new phone cable through, but once done, it has been fine since.

With respect, you could have fitted a new telephone extension in the time it has taken to write the posts here!. 20m is not too long (I worked for BT for 10 years so know for sure). Just run in a new cable, plug in filter, job done!!

Agreed, actually I'm not sure what some people's issue is with connnecting a phone line to the Sky box, when I got Sky 7 or 8 years ago I was told I needed a phone connection so prior to the engineer coming I put one behind the TV. Sky and now the HD box have remined plugged in ever since, nothing seems to happen though and certainly doesn't affect my use of the phone. I pay no attention to it, hence my ignorance about how Sky Anytime and upgrades are downloaded.

If its a big job fitting a phone extention you can get boxes that do it over the mains,
something like this would do the job,

For a multiroom installation you do need the phone connected as they do check periodically

Update:-

Spent the morning going to Maplins and buying a telephone extension kit, and after two hours drilling through walls and skirting boardssmash to find the most direct route, finally fitted new socket behind TV.

I haven't bothered reading the entire thrad, because that's not the PH way.

Having your phone line connected only really matters if you have Multi-Room. The reason being every now and then the boxes will'phone home' to verify they're both at the same address. It's to stop you getting two viewing cards then selling one to your mate.

At 20m your phone cable is probably too long, I had problems with phones upstairs not working and this turned out to be the problem.
