i've read alot of good things about the samsung b650 series

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/524328/SA...

thats one i've seen - for the amount i've got to spend is that a decent one?

i'll be using it for HD movies, no gaming (sadly not allowed), general tv viewing.

one feature i like is the USB video playback on this - avforums does seem to like this model

I've just bought that exact TV today.

- 1080p 100hz blu-ray + xbox 360 picture stunning
- vibrant colours
- very deep blacks and brilliant whites, no shading or grey clouding (excellent for movies)
- excellent picture calibration and adjustment

Only minor so far -

- Sound quality is a little "tinny" however I have yet to calibrate the settings.

How far are you sat from the TV?
If more than 6', then a 40" 1080p TV is wasted, and you'd be better off with an HD Ready one.
Simply put, spend £100 less (as per the linked site) on a Panny 42X10 Plasma, or spend the extra on a 50G10 from Digital Direct (a certain member's store - he might even do you a bit of a PH'er deal, if you ask very nicely).

Job jobbed, as they say.

When you said HD movies, are we talking Sky+ HD ones or Blu-Ray ones?
If the former, then you'll gain nothing from having a 1080p panel, so the 50X10 makes more sense - especially from 10' away.
4' viewers will find it a bit pixelated perhaps, as they might be able to see the individual pixels that make up the panel.

If we're talking B-R, then you definitely need a 50" display, and sit about 6' from it, max, in order to appreciate the extra resolution. If that's not likely, then a 42G10 Panny Plasma will be the best all round compromise.

no its the bluray.

i dont buy into all that HD sky crap. a football is round on any tv. rooney wont look any better in HD. though if cheryl cole sticks around i might be persuaded...

the only thing putting me off a 50" is the sheer size and where its going to be wall mounted. i'm going to be putting it on a pull out wall bracket

There's nothing to stop you enjoying a B-R movie on a 42" screen, it's just that at 1080p (assuming you've a Full HD panel) you won't see any difference compared to an HD Ready (768 vertical pixels) with a 1080p output scaled down to fit or 720p upscaled, but the point of going big, if you're into your movies, is to get the immersive element, as you would at the cinema.

You can get a Panasonic 42G10 for less than that.
