Can anybody recommend a set of noise-cancelling headphones that
a) Do a decent job of cancelling ambient noise (several long haul flights & train journeys coming up)
b) Don’t leak noise and irritate person sat next to me

In the last few weeks I’ve tried both Goldring NS1000 and Audio Technica ANC7 but wasn’t hugely impressed with either – despite both getting reasonable reviews on a few websites. Noise cancelling in both cases only seemed to marginally reduce background noise (though perhaps aeroplane/train “drone” is more likely to be cancelled?) but crucially when listening to music at normal volume, my wife could tell what I was listening to from other side of the lounge.

Budget up to say £150ish

Bose quietcomfort 3 noise cancelling headphones are reckoned to be some of the best, and having tried some I have to say they really are quite astonishing. However these are way above your budget (around 250 - 300)

I have also read good reviews about the Nokia BH-905 bluetooth noise cancelling headphones and some say they are better than the Bose. I havent tried them yet but have not read anything bad about them. I am sure I saw these online before xmas for around 170 GBP

In ear active noise cancelling.

Bloody excellent and cut out loads of the aircraft drone and general mush. Pretty cheap as well and nice and compact for your luggage.

Bought a set of Bose quiet comfort 2, off ebay. They are really good, although on a long flight the ears get a bit sweaty, but a quick rub sorts that out. The comfort 3's are better as they sit on the ears. Well worth buying. Or travel Business and you normally get a pair to use on the flight smile

Best headphones i've ever had.Never fall out, excellent bass for an earbud type.

The noise cancelling is really good without music on you can't hear much they're also very comfortable.

I have had a pair of Bose QC3's for over 3 years now. Great headphones, super comfortable and perfect for long haul flights.
They've recently gone hinky and BOSE were less than useless about it, offering me £125 discount towards a new pair.

One quick trip to Tottenham Court Road, £35 later and headphones working again.

In the meantime I had bought a pair of Goldring NS1000 for £50 at the airport. They are much chunkier and took a while to get used to wearing them, but the sound is fantastic and as they cup the ear, out and about and on the plane the noise cancelling is almost as good as the Bose. Considering they are £250 cheaper, they are a bargain.

It all depends if you want in-ear or not.

These http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/544...
are great. Last for ages, proper sennheiser warranty, very good cancellation. If you haven't got some already, just get them.

Looks a nice piece of kit, report back when you've tested them out. I'm curious if you could connect them to an mp3 player with the wire, but answer calls from your phone on the bluetooth part of the headset?

Headphones or earphones?

I have a pair of Sennheiser in-ear ones, even at uncomfortable volumes there's not a peep to the outside world.

Forget the overpriced Bose tat and grab some Sennheise HD-25-1 mk2.

No need for noise cancelling if you have a good seal, plus these are comfortable, light and sound amazing. There is a reason that plenty of DJs use these and you see them worn by commentators and those in the broadcast industry. Been out for Donkeys years showing their lasting power and quality. Plus every part is user replacable if it should break, not that they will (something that can''t be said about the crap build of Bose products)

Bought mine from the DJ store online for about £120 2 years ago and I certainly don't treat them with care. 2 years of commuting on the train/tube and being worn out in rain/wind/snow hasn't affected them in the slightest.

Stunning phones, just ignore the city/business mans favourite Bose headphones that are only universally praised by style magazines wink

Cheers all for suggestions so far.

I'm looking for headphones; I already have a pair of SoundMagic PL30 IEM's (which I use with small Comply Foam Tips) which I'd highly recommend for the £30 or so they cost - way better than any other earphones I've tried around this price point. Although excellent, I don't like using them for more than maybe 2 hours or I start to get a bit of discomfort.

Re headphones, I've already tried the Goldrings as per my original post, and was disappointed with 'leakage' - others sitting across the room could hear what I was listening too. Think I'm going to try both the Senn PXC350 and HD's as suggested above.

Thanks again....
