Chaps,

A very vague/odd requirement here, as it has quite a few 'ifs' and 'buts'. BUT ... here goes.

Can someone recommend me some speakers? Budget - less than £100. But that's a little flexible. Second hand is fine. Shelf speakers (they will go on brackets or a shelf. So, near to a wall.)

What will they be powered by? The system is a Cambridge Audio CD player and a NAD 910 surround-sound processor, being used as (effectively) a pre-amp.

The amps are a pair (one for each side) of Crown D45's. Yes, I told you it was a bit odd. They are studio amps, supposedly very good, each of which produces around 150 watts. (I was given them ... )

The speakers are some cheapo things, and I'd like to upgrade them. (I believe they are the weakest part of the system.)

I heard a friend's Tannoy M2's the other day and they sounded lovely. Played from a Sony amp of some kind. Having done a bit of research, it sounds like the Quad 11L's are good as well, although possibly a little more expensive. (I was bidding on some 11L's on eBay but the gent selling them has just pulled the auction.)

So ... what do you recommend? Shortlist is Tannoy M2's, Quad 11L's ... anything else? And is buying from eBay a good idea or should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Oli.

P.S. Amp-wise, the other option is a C-Audio RA-2001, which is a stage amp with (I think) 650 watts per side. I presume that using this would be a bad idea?

Superfi still have some stock of the Wharfedale 9.1's

Very respectable speakers 5* What HiFi award.

Just watch the volume with those amps!

ETA: The 9.1s also have threaded holes on the rear for wall mounting.

Mordant-Short (wrong spelling I think) are great cheap-ish speakers.

Q Acoustic 1020i are worth a look. £80 at Superfi. I've got a pair and am very impressed with them.

You'd be lucky to get the Quads you like for £100. I haven't heard them, but they sure look nice.

You should be able to pick up Tanny M2s for peanuts second hand, and there are lots about. They were an amazing bargain when they were new. Serious bang for buck - I could never believe how good they sounded for their price.

For me, if I were in your position and had some time, I'd hold out for some older Ruarks - something like Broadsword or Sabre (only available second hand) but should come in at around or less than £100. I reckon they all sound fantastic.
