Although I do recall Der popping in here a couple of months ago and mentioning that he and Gandalf were sat watching one of those Phillips wide screen LCD TVs and that the picture was on a par with a lot of plasmas.
I'm trying to go plasma with my next purchase, but I keep reading the rising black loevel threads on AVF about the Panasonics and I wouldn't entertain an LG or Samsung so that doesn't leave much choice. Been considering the new Sony 46EX703 but it has issues with 'coning' backlights, so the cheaper 46HX703 might be in the running despite the fact it's an LCD...(yes i know my spelling is bad, deal with it)
Do you mind me being cheeky and asking you a question about my Pana TV (haven't got the model number to hand but its 2 years old)? When I switch it on, half the time the green LED flickers on and off before going red, then it flashes slowly on and off. If I'm lucky it will boot up the second time, if not it may take several tries.
If the model is important I can check and report back.
Many thanks.

Its a standard panasonice failure mode, you will notice that the red light will blink a number of times then pause then it will repete. The number of times it flashes is basically a fault code telling the engineer where he needs to start looking for the fault. If you can get it to fire up the second time then it could well be an LCD set with backlight problems, they have released a software upgrade for certain models to get the inverter to fire a few times before going into failure mode.

Thanks - I will give Argos a call and see who our local repairer is.If you go to www.panasonic.co.uk and search under support you can find your nearest repair agent or give Argos grief as it should be under SOGA
Last month I needed a new TV as our old faithful samsung plasma had started to get a memory affect on the screen. After doing a little shopping around I popped to john lewis as they had an offer on 600Hz panasonic plasmas and bluray players with a 5 year guarantee.
Brilliant picture and I'm very very happy with it.

+1. Brilliant picture and I'm very very happy with it.
Got my G20 and the 'free' 250 GB bluray recorder with it from them a couple of weeks back. Great service, great delivery, 5 yr warranty on the TV and I've been very, very impressed with the Panasonic picture versus my cheap £500 40" Samsung LCD in the gaming room. The plasma provides a much, much more immersive feel when watching a movie. It's all at a price, of course, but seems well worth it to me as I love films.

John Lewis will proi match any bricks and mortar shop that has stock (I got £400 off a £1600 telly last week by getting them to price match Richer Sounds)....
They also extend this offer to 1 month after pruchase - if you find the TV cheaper within a month you can get the difference refunded (even if the shop they price matched futrther reduces their price), and the best bit is that free r warranty is still included, even if the competirtors are charging extra for it!

I just went to Plasma from LCD for my main TV. The single downside is that the matte finish on LCDs is much less affected by reflections than the gloss shine of plasma and CRT screens, so the curtains have had a bit more use since the switch. The picture is miles better though, and that is only a very sensibly priced mid-range 60" LG (not a megabucks Panasonic).
Also would suggest the demo discs and films I saw on high end LED TVs looked superb and at least as good as the Panasonic plasma's I was looking at. In the end I didn't think the LED was worth the additional cost (to me) so chose the plasma, but if cost was less of a consideration then I struggled to see the difference (from a HD source) between LED and plasma.

the full HD Blueray demo I saw on a 50 inch LED screen was amazing.
better than anything Ive seen on plasma- so far.
But will the SD be that much worse?

I was in a PC World not long ago and they had all the set technologies next to each other, making a big song and dance about the brilliance of LED.
It was bloody obvious that the LED had its colours set to 11 to look good under store lighting, the LCD about halfway and the Plasma set correctly but it looked washed out as a result (as it would under harsh blue lighting).
It was also, surprise surprise, displaying a static image.
Get yourself off to a specialist dealer, ask if they have calibrated sets you can look at to make a proper comparison.
Plasma is still king because it's innately superior at displaying a moving image. The facts are clear, measurable and obvious.
