Was searching on Ebay for a plasma, and failed on a bid for a Hitachi 42PD9700 42", which eventually went for £267.

The above model cost £2000 on release approx 2007, was awarded 5* What Hifi/tv, all other reviews were highly regarded 9/10 including user reviews, lots of users compared to the panny px60, with many saying it was superior.

How would that tv or tv of similar ilk/vintage compare to a £400 new panny or LG with newer tech.

Depending on what you expect/need from it, it would probably be a perfectly good set. My 5 yr old samsung is just fine although I needed a HDFURY to get HDCP content to work.
I would probably pay £100-150 more and get a new one though, just because it comes with a warranty if nothing else.

The only thing I'm not sure about in regards plasmas' is the ability to do higher resolution from a PC input.
Will a plasma take a setting above 1024*768, I wouldn't mind connecting my PC above that resolution, the TV I mentioned has two hdmi ports, which I would use for xbox360.

Also as you say for another £100-£150 I could have a new TV with warranty.

I have a 5 year old Hitachi PD model - the picture quality beats the crap out of almost every TV I see in any other person's house.

It depends on how good it was in the first place, i have a Panna 42PW7 and it has a SD picture better than any of the HD sets displaying SD. So if its only SD your after then something like that would be a good buy, also you may find the older plasma only has an analogue tuner so it would need a freeview box to make it work in a switched over area.

That's good to know, wish I bid a bit more now!

Anyone know about the running higher than 1024*768 computers on plasma's ?

I have a 42PD9700

Other than the Pioneer Plasmas and the very latest Panasonics, nothing holds a candle to them.

Best chassis in modern television engineering.

I have a Panny PW7 with a scart only board fitted. I love the telly to bits, but would like to add sky hd. Has anyone trid the hd converters/HD fury etc?
I'd rather stick to the panny for the time being.

Never tried a converter but the screen res on the PW7 is very low (cant remember exactly but its way less than 1024*768)so you really wouldnt make anything of a HD transmision. There are component boards availabe that work a treat you could get yourself an early SKY HD box from fleabay that has component out. HDMI terminal boards were available but im pretty sure they only worked in HD version of the PW7.

Surprised the power supply hasn't jumped ship! Great panel at the time so perhaps we were just unlucky with a few of those we flogged

My power supply did jump ship - repaired for £80 and is now going strong again.

It wasn't until I saw a G20 panasonic in action that I found a TV I was actually happy to replace my Hitachi with. The Hitachi is now on bedroom duties.

One of the best screens around. We've still got hundreds out in pubs and clubs. Very few issues. Wouldnt bother changing if I was you!
