Discussion
I recently upgraded from a 32" LCD to a 42" plasma.
The viewing angle on the plasma is far superior.
The picture is far superior (even discounting the fact that the new set is HD).
There are known backlight issues with some Sony LCD models.
37" and bigger - I wouldn't have anything other than plasma.

I think the SAMSUNG LE40C580 40" Full HD LCD TV for £549 looks good to me
If you've already decided on the Samsung, then why did you post asking for advice? I think the SAMSUNG LE40C580 40" Full HD LCD TV for £549 looks good to me
If you hadn't decided on the Samsung when you posted, then why are you ignoring all the advice?

A curious accuracy for a magazine...Mediocre st in nice cases. It's their corporate edict.
Two of my colleagues have Samsung sets, chosen because they were deemed to have the better picture by comparison.
My son also has a 22" Samsung, and it looks pretty good to me.
^^^ agree with that.
In my particular case, I was undecided between a Samsung and LG.
The two sets were adjacent to each other, and I felt that picture on the LG was ever so slightly better.
In my experience, samples can vary even between the same make / model - you can get many good ones, a few bad ones, and a few excellent ones.
Ideally go to Comet / Currys / Richer Sounds etc, try and get them all on the same channel, and compare...
This is what I did.
I only read the What HiFi reviews, to find out which sets have problems (e.g. the Sony back light issue).

The problem is that shops are all lit with ultra bright strip lighting and the TVs are tuned to give the best (brightest, highest contrast) image under those conditions. It's safe to assume that the room that you watch the TV in your house won't be lit anything like this, meaning that shop vewings are pretty worthless IMO.In my particular case, I was undecided between a Samsung and LG.

So I know what I'm looking for in terms of picture quality, and I'm not afraid to tweak the shop settings.
Interestingly enough, I did notice that the few sets I looked at were set to factory default.
And the fact that a set can render a good picture under such bright lights, suggests to me that I won't be struggling to see it on a sunny day (my lounge is North facing so quite sunny in summer).
So the bright lights do have some use
Edit: fixed quoting.

Get the TV which YOU think has the best picture, not what someone else thinks is the best picture. It's as simple as that.
That's a given. But before I go view again I just wanted some opinion. People around here seem to like giving it....Jubal said:

That's a given. But before I go view again I just wanted some opinion. People around here seem to like giving it....Their film isn't bad but their processing electronics, interface electronics and chassis design are properly appalling. Curiously however they've got relatively good colour management but it's a bit like putting a learner in a Ferrari in that respect. Their colour management is over specified because the raw materials to create a good picture simply aren't there.
Given that Silver993TT has a comical axe to grind I'll now leave him to it, I've got nothing to gain whatever you buy, not least because of the fact that we don't sell screens outside of professional monitors above 65" any more.
This advice is worth what you've paid for it but anyone who has spent a significant time trying to make Samsung products work as they should won't have an awful lot of good to say about them.

Thanks, I think. I don't know what you mean by "their film isn't bad" in this context. I was hoping for the dumbed down layman's version but at the price of the advice I'll take what I can get.Their film isn't bad but their processing electronics, interface electronics and chassis design are properly appalling.
