I'm fancy upgrading the lounge TV. It's currently a 26" LCD, brought when it was in my room at home, but now I've moved out it looks too small in the living room. I've brought a nice surround sound setup and the TV is getting left behind!

I don't want to get a TV too big for the room as I'll never hear the end of it! If you were sitting on the sofa opposite the wall where the current TV is hung, you are 2meters from the TV panel to your face as it were.

I've been looking at these 42" Panasonic Plasmas that are so highly rated around these parts but I think I might have to opt for ~32". Is this more of an LCD size over a plasma?

I hoped to get a TV with the HD Freesat/ HD Freeview tuner built in for future proofing, I don't really want a separate STB.

So if anyone has a rough rule of thumb for sitting distance/ panel size that would be great. Also, any recommendations for a nice set would also be welcomed. ~£600ish maybe, I'll see see how I get going with that.

It seems that the Panasonic TX-L37G20B (37"(~£650)) and Panasonic TX-L32G20B (32"(~£550)) might be right for me.

They're both LCD. Is plasma something I should push for over LCD or are they similar in quality?

They say that anything less than 37 inch LCD is your best bet, anything over then maybe a plasma.

Do yourself a favour and check out the new range of LG tv's - either the plasmas or the LEDs. They are great TVs

Panasonic 37X20 Plasma

1080p is pointless on a 37" set.

The Plasma will handle colours, motion and an SD feed better.

What size screen does 1080p become an advantage?

I see that the 37X20 has no Freeview HD or HD Freesat tuner built in. I currently have SD Freeview, but this will change in a few years and I'll have to buy a new set top box for HD Freeview.

Saying all of this, my signal is poor in the slightest of bad weather. Freesat could be an option to solve this.

If the tuner is a consideration, obviously the LCD is the better bet.

1080p in the vast majority of applications is a projection resolution.

I'll have a look. I've gone the Panasonic route after much PH phrase.

What is the website of the PHer who sells this type of thing? Looking for a good place to buy.

I've just ordered a Panasonic TX-L37G20B.
Should I cancel and buy a Panasonic TX-P37X20 Plasma?

The plasma is about £250 cheaper too.

Many Thanks, Aj

Tempted to try and blag a 42" and go for the Panasonic VIERA TXP42G20.

I don't think I'll be able to come to a joint agreement to buy a 42", but one can try. I think I'll mock up a cardboard template first to show the size.....maybe cut it a bit smaller even...

Hmmm, I think my original thoughts of a 42" are too big! (Green post-it's are the 42" dimensions).

Nonsense.....you need something sizeable to hide that God-awful wallpaper! biggrin

As for 1080p - Google it and viewing distance, all will become clear.

The wallpaper isn't that bad! It's more brown with green branches on it, showing up the silvery brown branches when the light catches them.

Anyway, I need to measure up a 32" and a 37" to see what I stand on size.

Trust me when I say that background is far too busty for anything less than a 42"er.

Edit:
Busy, not busty, but I'll leave it there for the comedic value.
