Hey gang,

I'm sure this has been asked before but the search didn't throw up any particularly relevant threads.

I'm after spending a max of £250 (or there abouts) on a Freesat HD recorder. Googling suggests that Grundig or Humax are the brands of choice. Does anyone have any input on this?

What I'd particularly like is:

  • Expandable memory/HDD space (USB external HDD?)
  • Ability to get programs off the unit via USB to tidy up on the PC (not a show-stopper though)
  • Integration with iPlayer etc.
Anything else you chaps think I should be considering?

Many thanks,
Phil.

No input other than that my parents went for a Humax after doing some research and have been very happy with it.

Thanks all. I currently have a freeview Humax thing and it's a bit rubbish, I have to say. Randomly doesn't record. Freezes. Dead slow reaction time to the remote. This was bought many years ago though - have they upped their game?

I have a Humax HDR and it's great, very stable, never missed a beat if that helps.

There went through a period where the software went really dodgy. Big update in June fixed it. Box should have automatically updated.

Which Box. HUMAX updated the software months ago and recently scheduled it for transmission again to "catch" any missed.

I'd make sure you look at the Humax before buying. When Freeview boxes first appeared on the market and bought a Samsung unit, shamefully to match the telly, however, it was a great little unit, nice interface etc.

When I packed up, I did some more research and everywhere was listing the Humax as the best, compared to the Samsung is was terrible. Hopeless interface, slow, clunky to use, no sound when viewing the EPG, etc.

Not impressed.

Don't know what you were looking at but the 9200T/9150T/9300T have a Picture window for the "viewed" channel and sound while you peruse the EPG. I've seen various attempts to "better" the Humax and none have been as good. The problems were due to a Freeview Upgrade in Aug/Sept 2009 which used a feature previously "ring fenced" as "not to be used" causing problems with the EPG on the 9200T, 9150T and 9300T. The "fix" was issued as a download just before Christmas 2009 and and updated fix was transmitted between February and March 2010. The delay was due to having to re-program the Unit and to supply a "faster" loading EPG. The fact that HUMAX actually went to the trouble of "fixing" a box that they no longer sold reflects well on them I would have thought.

I currently have 2 x 9200T's and a 9150T all working perfectly. They were the only Freeview tuners able to pick up all the channels during the recent debacle that is the Pre-DSO work at Emley Moor. One of the 9200T's has been upgraded to a 500GB SATA drive the remaining units are 160GB standard devices.

I've got the Humax Freesat box, very happy with it.

  • Expandable memory/HDD space (USB external HDD?)
I regularly plug a USB HDD into mine to watch videos and it seems to be able to play most things I throw at it! Not sure about saving recorded programs on there mind, never tried it.

  • Ability to get programs off the unit via USB to tidy up on the PC (not a show-stopper though)
Apparently it's possible, not tried it.

  • Integration with iPlayer etc.
It's not great to be honest, if I need to stream something I use my bluray player as it's a much nicer iPlayer interface (plus has YouTube, 4 on demand, lovefilm, etc. etc.)

If mine broke I wouldn't hesitate in getting another one!

Not a clue, this was some of the first freeview boxes, ~10 years ago.

Good Box especially if you like the "hobbyist" features. However it is a "Freeview" box and they don't do an equivalent Freesat box.

Gandalf (Der's colleague) recommended one of panny's HDR widgets to me as it means one less box. Does the lot basically. I've been very pleased with it apart form it's speed at flashing up a Blu-Ray to the menu.

This is the newer one.
