Richer Sounds are doing these with 5yr warranty for just under £500 (£50 cheaper than John Lewis).

the reviews seem to be really really good in terms of functionality, picture quality and sound quality.

my gf' is after a 37" or 40" tv with full 1080p and ideally freeview HD (which the samsung has). she was looking at the Sony KDL40EX503 in John Lewis but the picture quality is absolutely crap when compared with the Samsung, Toshiba and Panasonic TV's lined up alongside.

the budget is £500 absolute max and she wants the best bang for the buck...

any opinions on the samsung?

(i recently bought a cheap tesco tecnika tv for the bedroom which has a samsung panel and the picture quality is absolutely amazing... far better than the expensive toshiba tv i put on the wall in the kitchen or the sony bravia in the living room)

Most modern TVs look pretty great with a decent HD feed connected. Where they fall down is with a normal or low quality SD feed connected.

The problem is in the shop you'll only see TVs adjusted for fluorescent lighting and maximum effect, usually with an HD feed.

The next problem is most of what you watch will be SD rather than HD. Have you previewed the TVs with SD content side by side?

The next problem is that the vast majority of people don't realise they don't actually need 1080p on a 40" screen at a normal viewing distance (you don't because your eyes are unable to see any difference between 720p and 1080p).

So... to summarise.

Buy this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-TX-P37X20B-37-in...

and with the change buy a freeview HD box. Or several months sky subscription.
