Hi guys , hoping someone can help me out , Ive just bought a LG pk590 plasma tv which says has arc , i need to send the audio back to my yamaha AV amp so I can hear the inbuilt freeview. So I was hoping to use a HDMI cable which has arc built in or do I have to use an optical cable from the TV , hope that makes sense and someone can shed some light to me . Cheers Rich

Assuming both devices support ARC then just a standard HDMI lead will do the job, if one of the devices dosent
support ARC then you will need an optical.

Cheers Headcase , I've just contacted LG and they say ARC is only via the optical , no biggy apart from MrsCone has cablephobia and I promised she'd only see one -- looks like no turkey for me .

Hmmm....if it's only available via an Optical out, then it isn't an Audio Return Channel - it's an optical audio out. ARC means that you can send a picture and return an audio channel through the same cable - an HDMI cable as mentioned. Which LG model is it?

Blimey, they don't go into much detail on LG website!! Anyway, nothing I can see on the LG site about that particular telly lists ARC anywhere. There isn't even a decent photo of the connections on the rear. So I think that it's reasonable to assume that the telly doesn't have any ARC functionality. The Amp does though, but it's no use on it's own.

If it helps, i've had our LG PK590 connected via optical to one of those all in one surround sound jobbies and it works fine, even for mkv files played through an external hard drive.

As for wife phobia, couldn't you clip the optical cable with the hdmi using tie clips or something so it looks like one?

Piccy of the rear of the TV, generally if an HDMI socket has ARC it will say so on the socket itself, nothing hinting at ARC in this piccy.

Cheers all , Ive got a optical cable in the post and will get that plugged in and I'm sure it'll be fine , cablephobia will be solved by painting both cables the same colour as the wall - theres only a short length visisble anyhow . Cheers for the rear side view of the set as now the tv is on the wall its tricky to see whats what.
