I'm looking for a surround sound set up but without a disk player or box under the TV (I have a PS3 for playing disks). I've found the SONY HTAS5-CEK 5.1Ch Home Cinema System http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/sony-htas5-cek-5-1ch-... . What other similar systems are there?

They look nice! What are these kind of set-ups called?

That's pretty unusual, because the surround amplifier is in the subwoofer, so I'd call it an all-in-one-surround system without DVD. It's Onkyo and they make good kit. Most systems will consist of a set of speakers and an amplifier and will cost from £500.

I can vouch for the kit, although not the one above, I've just upgraded my surround sound to an Onkyo amp, am very impressed.

Zod, as the resident man in the know... you don't happen to know of a surround system WITH a DVD recorder do you?

Looking to replace our existing one-box job as it doesn't have any HDMIs.

I know they exist, but I can't think of a model. I think they are beginning to die out. Do you really want a DVD recorder though? Would a Freeview box with a hard drive work for you?

We use Sky for recording, but find it useful to burn things to DVD.

Sony do a similar system to the Onkyo but the speakers are tiny! About the size of a golf ball. A few of my friends have this system and the sound quality is very impressive.

Looking for a cheap system to go into the new house to connect to PS3 (for Blu-Ray and games), Xbox, Wii etc.

What do you think of it? I'm not looking for an roof shaking system, just something to fill out the sound during a good film.

Nice and easy to use, set-up is pretty straightforward. Sound quality seems very good, but as I said, i'm no expert and can't tell the difference between something that's great and something that's average. When I bought it, the chap said that it was a step above DVD-surround sound systems, so I took his word for it! It seems to get good reviews from other people as well.

I wouldn't just take my word for it though, make sure you ask somebody who knows more than me hehe
