Since my Yamaha amplifier has started to give up the ghost, and all of my speakers are looking a bit dated, I'm looking at replacing my surround sound system.

I'm not really up to speed on my audio equipment, so was after a quick opinion from any of you lot that know what you're talking about.

I was thinking of an Onkyo TSXR508:

And a set of Pioneer speakers.

Opinions?

I went for the HTS6305 package the other day and just got it setup. It contains the 508 amp and Onkyo's own speaker package and have to say it sounds superb! Comes with an ipod dock and a setup mic which seems to have done its job perfectly.
I have no experiance of the Pioneer speakers though but I will say the Onkyo stuff looks good quality for the money.

Onkyo stuff looks good bang for buck right now.

Had my eye on the Onkyo 708 but the incompetence of Richer Sounds meant 100 miles of fuel wasted driving to the store twice, 2 weekend mornings lost to find they can't read a stock list. Emailed a complaint to customer services about it and the pormise of vouchers has gone missing. Money sat here waiting to buy and amp for the last month, I thought I'd support local business and buy from a shop. Should have gone straight to the internet and bought it cheaper.

You know that feeling the world is conspiring against you? Richer Sounds seems to be determined I won't buy an amp off them by cock up after cock up. They've got to the end of the week to sort it or mass, faceless internet firm it is. Hopefully you'll get a better experience with Richer Sounds than I got!

Found the HTS6305 system online last night, and am going to pick it up from my local Richer Sounds in a little while. Seems a bargain compared to others.

I was in the same boat last weekend, heading down to pick it up to find the disinterested moron behind the till giving me a 'Computer say no, there's none in stock' despite phoning ahead to check availability and reserve for pickup.

Good luck!

Bit of a mismatch really, some old Heybrook Solos at te front and some really tatty old satellite speakers, matched up to a Yamaha sub, sounds ok, when the amp is working, but it was time to get a new system, which I have done. Moving into a new place on friday, so will wait until then to get it all set up.

Had a demonstration in the shop (admittedly with higher range stuff than I actually bought) and it was worlds apart in sound quality and general atmosphere from what I've had for the last 8 years.

Bear in mind, all of my audio equipment was 2nd hand when I bought it in 2003.

For the money I cant fault mine. I traded from a Technics surround system hifi with normal sized front speakers, only because of the lack of inputs and the fact it had a tape deck and other modules that filled my cabinet. I thought the sound of that system was fantastic and a 5.1 cinema system with its small satellites wont live up to it, but its doing a dam good job of proving me wrong. It has given my movie watching a whole new dimension as I can now watch Sky in true Dolby surround smile
