Hello all,
Apologies if this is a retardulous question, I'm rather out of my depth here.

We've just bought a new home theatre surround sound/Blueray system. Previously, we had a very cheap Nikai speakers-only system that was free with the LG telly. We had that taking sound from the TV via the audio output sockets (red and white cables) and input from the Xbox into the TV via HDMI. So the Xbox sound went through the telly to the speakers.

The new HT speaker set up (LG HB905SA, for those in the know) is different, and has a single HDMI out socket to go into the telly, conveying picture and sound from Blueray. It all works fine with music, Bluerays etc.

However, we're a bit stumped as to how to get sound from the Xbox to the speakers. There's no HDMI In socket on the new HT system, so at the moment we have HDMI from Xbox to TV, and HDMI from Blueray to TV. Another thread on PH found while searching suggested HDMI for Xbox picture to TV, and optical for Xbox sound to speakers. But to get optical output from Xbox requires plugging in a dongle to the back that covers the HDMI port...

Am I missing something really obvious? I could, I think, use component connections from Xbox to TV for picture and to HT for sound, but that would presumably mean the picture quality isn't as good as HDMI. Seems strange to have bought a new, better speaker system but have to have a crapper picture.

If it makes any difference, we don't have broadcast TV on this screen, only sources are Xbox and Blueray.

Cheers in advance and apologies if this makes absolutely no sense at all.

Does the HT system have an optical input? If so then the best bet would be to plug the Xbox into the TV and then run an optical cable to HT system (as you suggested).

It does, but in order to get an optical out on the Xbox, a dongle plug in has to be put in the back. Said dongle covers the HDMI port, meaning it can't be used at the same time. So I would have to run component out for video, which presumably means a loss in picture quality.

Pretty narked, as I checked the system before I bought it and everything online says the HT system has two HDMI In sockets. It seems they changed it for this region (Middle East) yet kept the same name. Gits.

I guess I could run a regular audio out from the TV to the speakers, giving me slightly lower quality sound but keeping HDMI quality picture...?

Any use? http://www.avforums.com/forums/xbox-360/982786-hdm...

"The Official Solution
There is a dongle available for the Xbox 360 which fits in the AV out port while an HDMI cable is attached. "

There's also a ginger American here telling you how to butcher the cable normally provided out of the box http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FptCB_3DOz4

I've got two consoles, one is HDMI and the older one is component. When I hooked them up to the same 37" TV (at 1080i I believe) I couldn't see any difference in image quality. I've got the older console on a 50" plasma now and it still looks good.

It might be worth borrowing a component cable from someone before you decide what to do.
