Its alot to do with the frequency of the signal, Sat cable is desighned to work at a higher frequency than audio cable so technically it has more screening than is required for audio use.

I would use RG8 / RG58U or RG213 (replacement for RG8)

These are all 50 ohm type cables and would be fine for your intended purpose.

Thanks for the further comments guys. I've found a useful forum discussion here which seems to come to the same conclusion: any coax will do the job sufficiently better than anything else.

If you could find out without going to too much trouble, I'd love to know purely from an interest point of view. Sounds like you know some very handy people!
It comes with the territory of my job, and I should probably know this stuff myself anyway.

The consensus is that at a low power, line level application, it shouldn't pose too much of a problem, although the core in coax is very thin, so can't handle large current loads.

The issue might be to do with impedance, coax is generally 75 ohm (or 50, on occasion), whereas audio cable is generally around 300 ohm. That's from an electronics engineer. I'm still waiting from a response from an audio engineer to see if they thing differently.

Just remember to avoid sharp bends in the cable - in other words treat it the same as aerial coax.
