Panasonic DVD woes......
Discussion
Gents,
I`ve had seven years good use out of my Panasonic cinema system.
On Monday, the wife loaded a DVD (I think it was Bob the Builder or possibly Shaun the Sheep, either way it`d been accepted many times before) to be told by the system that it could not play the disc as it was the incorrect region.
It will still play music compact discs but whatever DVD I put in it thinks it`s unable to play due to this region error.
Any ideas or should I just accept that it`s had enough?

I'd google the model number and 'multi region hack'. Many DVD players had one model made for different regions, with the 'correct' region setting set before it was put in the box.
Quite often you can find a simple region hack using a remote control (either the supplied one, or a programmble one), or by an 'updated' firmware - I'd try this before binning it.
I had a Samsung that I made multiregion by a 'one for all 4' remote.

UK specific DVD players are region 2. This can often be changed to multi region or any other region using a region hack which is, more often than not, a few key presses on the remote followed by turning the machie on anf off! Beware of turning it to multi region though unless you have to because some discs will not play on multi region machines. If you can I would try and find out hout to reset the machine back to region 2. If this doesn't work I suspect the machine is knackered anyway and go out andy buy yourself a bluray!
Lots of the earlier Panasonics could only be hacked using a custom EPROM so it was basically a physical hack, either way if it used to work on region 2 and all of a sudden dosent its likely the laser is on its way out, its not unusual to report all manor a weird things when they are failing.
That was my second thought, to be honest - as the accuracy/resolution whatever you want to call it required to read a CD is much less than that needed to read a DVD, it's very likely that a failing system would behave this way.
The only other suggestion I'd try before ditching it would be to try a lens cleaning disc; it's just possible it's picked up enough gunk on the lens not to recognise a disk.
