The Big Northern Gathering will take place over the weekend of 22/23 August based around Penrith in the heart of the Eden Valley in some of the loveliest countryside in the UK.

There will be three drives on the Saturday, all limited in numbers and taking in some of the finest roads in Cumbria and the Borders. Drive 1 will cover the Penrith and Hexham areas including the famous Penrith to Alston road (led by a Tuscan 2), Drive 2 will cover West Cumbria and the fast roads around the coast (led by a T350) and Drive 3 will cover the Dumfries and Galloway areas (probably led by a SEAC) for those who like their roads clear and quick. Exact routes have not yet been decided but each route will have interesting countryside and roads suitable for cars with low ground clearance. There will be no cost to join each run as refreshments will be paid for when taken at the stops. The runs will finish well in time for a wash and brush up before the evening cruise.

Saturday evening will consist of a cruise on Ullswater for a lucky 70 people who will cruise from Pooley Bridge or Gelenridding down Ullswater and return two hours later to park up and enjoy a further hour or so on the steamer MS Raven and thence to your hotel for final socialising before a late night in readiness for the show the following day. A buffet will be included in the cost of the cruise so you will enjoy the lakeside scenery whilst enjoying some fine cuisine and company of other TVR owners. The journey from the steamer to your hotel will be over empty roads. Cost for the cruise is £30 and bookings can be made through the TVRCC Office.

There is a wide range of accommodation within easy reach of Penrith, from the 5 star Sharrow Bay Hotel to camping grounds by the side of Ullswater. Early booking will allow regions to get all members into the same hotel or B&B. Most hotels in the area have safe parking, but in case of any concerns contact us in North Cumbria and we will advise you accordingly.

Sunday will start with the drive to the Gathering in Hutton in the Forest. Today Hutton-in-the-Forest reflects centuries of history and change. A house of six periods between the mid 14th and the mid 19th centuries, Hutton is a rich illustration of the development of the country house in the North of England. Entry to the gathering at £5 per car will also allow entry to the gardens of the house.

As a bonus, there is a 3 day event (horses) taking place across the road which gives added interest to those not quite as fervent about TVR.

To really round off the weekend stay another night (or more) at the hotel and then travel to Scotland or another Northern Region as part of a holiday in the UK and save money by staying in the sterling area.

As of today (5 March) there are 24 places available on the cruise. 46 lucky people are already booked, so for a convivial evening contact the TVRCC Office to book one of the remaining places.

wink

I've always wanted to go to this, but it's always clashed with other things. The one time I was all set to go in my old TVR, the show was cancelled due to foot and mouth disease. Definitely planning to go this time, TVR or no TVR!

But there won't be any TVRs at Dalemain!!

And there is a 3 day event across the road at Hutton for those interested in horses - and it is a world class event (like the BNG).

Sorry Les, I got this completely wrong. I'm sure I heard somewhere that you'd arranged the BNG to coincide with the Dalemain show, but clearly this is not the case.

I wasn't trying to tempt people away from the BNG, just the opposite in fact! smile

The BNG was initially to be with the Dalemain show. We were going to be a part of it and had agreed with WMC for this to happen in October 2008. We put the date for BNG into the TVRCC calendar based on that agreement.

On January 14 2009 we received an email saying that WMC could not accommodate us as the presence of 200 TVRs would 'give a negative imbalance to our Classic Show which has been developed over the past 20 years'.

We were very grateful to find another location for the date (which had already been set in the TVRCC calendar some months before).

There was never any intention of setting up in competition, but the date was forced upon us.

Hope this sets the record straight and whoever said we set the date deliberately to compete can be informed of the facts.

For those interested in the Cruise on the Saturday night (22nd) there are now only 10 places left. Places are selling out fast and it is a first come first serve basis so to make the weekend, get in touch with the TVRCC office.
A TVR is not essential to join the cruise!

The drives on Saturday are also filling up nicely. We have limited each drive to 20 cars on the basis that any more would not allow the drives to become social events.

The drives are not intended to be competitions to see who can drive quickest, but to allow viewing of some of the best countryside in the UK. (The rev limiter in the left hand seat will not be eyes closed and praying! smile )

There are still 6 places left on the cruise. We may be able to increase this by another 12 if there is enough demand. We need to ensure that the extra places are equal to those already taken.

My advice would be to get in quick for those not yet booked.

Tony

The boat is now fully booked, so unfortunately this option is no longer available. The last booking was early last week.

No consolation I know, but the boat was never limited to TVRCC members only it was just that we used their facilities to book the boat.

The drives are still available to all, just request addition on the thread. There are still places available today (Monday 27) but drive 3 is gettig near maximum. As for the boat we will not be increasing the numbers, so when it's full it's full.

The BNG day at Hutton is come one come all, and no need to be a TVRCC member, just bring along the car. You may even want to join the club afterwards, but that is your choice. Check us out first to see if you like us smile

Camping and Hotels

Hotels I know people are staying at are;

Pooley Bridge Inn
Rampsbeck
Brackenrigg Hotel
Leeming House

Camping

Parkfoot
Ullswater Marine and Camping.

If you find all hotels booked, then try The George Hotel in Penrith.

The hotels and campsites being used are between Penrith and Glenridding as most people are taking the cruise and are on the bus route.

Drive 2 starts at;
Sheep and Wool Centre at Cockermouth just off the A66 on the A5086. 11:30 for 12:00 start.

As you are booked in, you are expected, and should look out for a Lotus Exige (or something like that) as Mark will be the lead driver. Tail end Charlie is a Cerbera, so you won't feel alone.
