One could argue that John Wayne only ever played one character; and that was basically himself. So you could say he wasn't a very good actor. smile

Sean Connery when he's not Bond.

Need an old Irish cop, ask Sean to play it Scottish (The Untouchables)

Need a Spanish nobleman, ask Sean to play it Scottish (Highlander)

Need a Russian submarine commander......ask Sean to play it Scottish (Hunt for the Red October)

my choice - hayden christensen

Some of the others:
Tom Cruise - not a great actor but appreciates his fans - watch how he'll spend hours in the rain talking to people before one of his premiers.
Arnie - Ok so he got out acted by the puppet endoskeleton in Terminator 1. Who cares!
John Wayne - almost certainly - I can't tell any of his characters apart.

Of course he appreciates his (female) fans, they provide a great cover for his homosexuality.

Yes, yes this is all very nice chaps. However may I ask, in light of all these cinematic heavyweights being discussed, have any of you actually seen Gran Torino?

I concur with that. Although I've got into into arguments with people about his talent.

Oh, he was a Film Star and a huge Box Office draw, without a doubt. I think it all comes down to your definition of an actor.

Haven't seen Gran Torino. Is this guy worse than Andie McDowell in Four Weddings/Greystoke/Green Card/Olay Adverts?
EFA. Worse than that chap who played Flash Gordon.

Keanu's good in a certain type of film. I couldn't imagine Speed, Point Break or The Matrix being any better with a different lead actor.

It's got to be Matt Damon, surely? Seen Team America? He wasn't there for nothing.

Sure, he isn't worse than Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise but both of them are quite easy to like on screen. Damon just makes me want to beat him to death with a knobkerry.

Connery was superb in the film 'The Hill'

I think he had the ability to be an excellent actor, but chose to be a film star, if that makes sense
