I actually think you are both wrong. Listen to the Ricky Gervais podcasts, and it becomes clear that it's really the Karl Pilkington show. Gervais and Merchant are just there as leverage to get his astonishing brand of deadpan comedy into the limelight. He's an Ali G style alter-ego.... just amazingly subtle. Simply has to be. His comedy is timed and tuned to perfection - a perfectly observed character.

I genuinely believe this - I don't think he is at all stupid - this is just his comedy routine.

There's a couple of points in some of the podcasts where you can hear him trying not to laugh as he's spitting out his 'stories'.

Take Karl out of picture and you're not really left with a lot of material. I'm not a fan of Ricky Gervais at all, but I think he works well in the 'responding to Karl's 'stupidity'' role.

I don't know Ricky G, in everything that I've read and watched (do I need any other caveats?) I have never liked him, fashionable or not.
