I'm intruiged by how empty one's life can be to class this as the 'ultimate question'.

What makes you think he might have been? Why would it affect the story either way if he was? It's not clear to me exactly why he failed the Voigt-Kampf test, but then it's a heckof a long time since I read the book.

  • Of course given that the story was set in the future, I suppose that should read "will have been"

Deckard is the protagonist from the film Blade Runner.

the link posted earlier will tell you all about what replicants are.

to those who asked, whether or not the lead character in an old sci fi film is a replicant is of course not the ultimate question to most people, however those who enjoy old and slightly obscure sci fi films are not most people.

Slightly obscure?

It's probably one of the best known films of all time.

I actually re-watched it last weekend, after quite a few years. I remember being very impressed with it first time I saw it - what with being an avid SF/Philip K. Dick fan at the time. First thing that struck me is it is set in 2019... and the city scapes will be nothing like that by then, but the (video) technology is way beyond all that already. Anyhow, what is most apparent is how incredibly sloooow and lacking in action this movie now is in comparison to recent movies. Must say I was disappointed, it didn't age well imho (ok, maybe I didn't age that well either...). Watching it with my 16-yr old I saw the boredom and had to fight sleep myself...

Anyway, back to the OPs question - well it is firmly in my drawer op questions of very little importance, but I think that indeed Deckard is a replicant.

Surley the ultimate question has to be,

What came first, the Terminator or the chip?

Sorry, but then why ask the question? It's not a factor in the film, but it is in the book???

I'm slightly confused now...

well because the film leaves it unanswered whether he is or not, and the vast majority of the times the film gets discussed, the question of whether or not Deckard is a replicant will come up.

And I asked, because if he truly considers it to be 'the ultimate question', he'd have done all his research before asking it hehe

Even though I know Bladerunner and enjoy it, when I read the OP's question I thought of Picard and Borg for some reason. Took me a few seconds to realise.

Or to put it another way it doesn't the whizz-bangs, ste cgi, and shaky camera angles with explosions going off every 5 minutes to keep the MTV generation interestedbiggrin

More to the point, the film leaves it unasked.

The way i see it, in the film, he isn't. In the book, he is.

He dreams of unicorns. Gaff knows this and leaves a little origami unicorn for him to find at the entrance to his apartment.

The book and the film are incomparible. In the book even the police chief (Bryant) is a replicant. This isn't referenced at all in the film.
