Currently my two favourite actors are Tom Hardy and Christian Bale. I think both of them go the extra mile for a role. They act in a way that you forget that they are actually an actor imo.

Good shout on Tom Hardy, saw Bronson the other day and he was exceptional in it. Surprised no ones mentioned Will Smith. This scene should warrant a nomination alone!

Christian Bale - Whichever role he commits to, he nails. The Machinist, American Psycho, Batman, The Fighter. Great in all of them.
You left out Newsies, Swing Kids, Velvet Goldmine... yes

Ah, that's a different thread... idea "When Good Actors do Bad Movies"

I'll mention Ewen McGregor here, before Star Wars.

Depp is the most versatile actor ever by far, but Keanu Reeves is the best. rofl

Kevin Spacey is one of my favourite actors, I think he's very much unappreciated. I watched The Life of David Gale a couple of days back and it was amazing, add to that The Usual Suspects, American Beauty and L.A. Confidential and you've got a good list of classics there.

Also: Leonardo Dicaprio, now he's got some age to him I think he's coming into his own. He definitely needs to do some proper gangster films along the lines of Once Upon A Time In America.

Yeo Tom hardy is fantastic.

Only seen him in Bronson and he shines.

I recommend watching Martina Coles The Take. It's a 4 part drama and it's fantastic. Must have watched it myself about 4 times now. It's also good to see him being put in a few Nolan films now.

No one mentioned Al Pacino yet? Criminal!

Scent of a Woman and Carlito's Way, not to mention The Godfather. Head and shouders above his peers, IMO (discounting De Niro...)

Between De Niro and Pacino, I think Pacino is the more intense and better actor (just).

I know he's never going to win plaudits everywhere, but he always seems to turn up in my favourite films: Gladiator, LA Confidential, Master and Commander, A Good Year (OK, but I liked it)yes it's good ole Russ.

The opposite for me. Pacino became a pastiche of himself years ago in my opinion. Still good, but predictable.

David Warner - Don't think he was ever the lead in anything, but he always made the films he was in better.
Not very topical I'll admit, but you asked the question.
I have always liked Warner, best as bad guy in my opinion, didn't like Titanic, but he was the best thing in it. He was good in the cartoon Gargoyles as well.

Nicholas Cage.

A truly versatile actor who's depth and subtlety shines through in every role - The Wicker Man being a high point. Perhaps his only low would be 'Leaving Las Vegas' but, hey, no one can be perfect I guess.

A lot have been mentioned - Johnny Depp, Gary Oldman, Steve Buscemi.

One that was a bit like DiCaprio for me, started off not so good then really good - Brad Pitt. He really went up when I saw 12 Monkeys and Fight Club.

Just thought Dirk Bogarde was the coolest bloke ever. (Yes I know he was gay)

Cos without John Mills we wouldn't have won the war smile

Sylvia Syms, cos she was lovely (and I know she hasn't aged well and I don't need to see a picture of her today)

Actor: Malcolm McDowell - the vividity with which he brings his characters to life is unparalleled in modern cinema. His iconic portrayals of rebellious young men have helped to create some of the 20th Century's most seminal films. As Bill Slocum put it so succinctly, "Is there anyone else who could make corruption seem so refreshing?"

Actress: Kate Beckinsale - cracking pair of tits.
