A grand old stalwarth of the BBC in the 60s and 70s passed away yesterday. Remember "Ask the Family" and "Call My Bluff" on TV and "Brain of Britain" on Radio 4?

Even though I hadn't heard anything about him for a while, still sad when I heard the news.
Time to start a "guess the object from the pic" thread in his honour?

This was great and compulsive family viewing for us.

Can you ever imagine someone like Campbell ever being in modern TV?

No and more's the pity.

Quintessentially English in the case of Muir and Irish in the case of Campbell (I think!).

Wonderful acerbic wit from both of them but essentially gentle comedy.

The 'modern' comedians would do well to learn from them.

Can you imagine a modern gameshow family on "Ask the Family"?

It would be against their OOman rights.

"Ask the Chavs".

A question for the mothers only.

If you have five children all under the age of 16, to the nearst £1,000, what would be your Children's Allowance and Child Tax Credits combined?

Probably be reduced to teams of 3, due to absent fathers.

Sad news about Mr Robinson, I must admit. I used to watch that whilst eating my Frosties before bedtime.

Funny that, I listened to the most excellent Skivers on R4 extra this morning & there was a sketch in a similar vein.

I used to listen to Brain of Britain & right up to the end, his hosting never seemed out of place. Very "R4" though, but nowt wrong with that.

Very BBC, very Radio 4, but in the very best way. Ask The Family was essential viewing in our house, and when I was allowed to watch Call My Bluff I felt very grown-up indeed!

I do wish the BBC (and for that matter ITV too) would delve deep into their archives and show some older shows with people like him. It would be nice to appreciate the work of these people, but especially so while they are still alive.

Robinson was still hosting "Brain of Britain" up until just over a year ago. The programme is still running - the quizmaster is now Russell Davies.
