Really enjoyed that, I've heard about it but not watched it.

There will always be people who hate on the things Banksy does, but its art, imo.

Now, I found these two in Guildford.. Very Banksy style, and even Banksy Style with regards to them being politically motivated, wonder if they're real..

Did anyone else see the C4 documentary 'graffiti wars' last night? Didn't really paint Banksy in good light, especially the Blek Le Rat imitations

No, but its acknowledged by both parties;

"every time I think I've painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier." Blek has disagreed with those who claim Banksy has copied his work: "People say he copies me, but I don’t think so. I’m the old man, he’s the new kid, and if I’m an inspiration to an artist that good, I love it."

Seems you are right, just found this quote too:

“I respect his work very much. He is very important. I started the movement but he is like my son. I consider him like my descendant. He took some ideas. But he changed them. And he took the movement to a huge level all over the world.

If Banksy didn’t exist I would still be a small French guy in Paris doing my things alone. Now I’m known here, I’m known in the States, I’m known everywhere. Thanks to Banksy.”

To echo the above, Banksy has always given credit to Blek Le Rat for being his inspiration and overall favorite artist.

As a relative unknown atm, Blek Le Rat's art is also at a fairly reasonable price at the moment and would guess to be worthwhile investment if it's 'Your Thing'.

Edited to say - just looked and it's gone up a bit since I last looked, seems to be getting a bit more exposure now hehe

The books a good read though. thumbup

Bit off topic but related, did they ever find out who hit Robbo over the head? Also how 'good' was Robbos free hand pic of that actress on the wall

According to the Team Robbo website it was an accidental injury, but having watched the documentary i got the impression he'd been attacked. I thought the actress picture was great - and far more artistic than any stencil 'street art'.

all art is derivative - some far more than others though

popularity and price has little to do with artistic merit but it pays the rent and leaves ears intact wink

i love the fact that there are stupidly rich people out in the world who will pay the best part of a man's annual salary, for something that is no better or worse than anything found displayed at any art college end of year show.

A quality film for anyone with an interest in street art and its progression into the mainstream.
It's not street art, it's vandalism and illegal.
Some of it really is very artistic and in my opinion if I walk past it and it makes me smile or laugh or think about it then its art. If its a random scribble in paint on a wall then its vandalism and stupid.

If its a great picture painted on a plywood hoarding I dont have much of an issue with it at all, if its some chav writing his name with a sharpie on the bus shelter then its vandalism.

Would be hard to legislate a difference between the two though.

great watch, really enjoyed it.

After placing the guantanamo bay prisoner in disneyworld:
"then i went on pirates of the carribean"

forged £10 notes
"I'd get 10 years for this"

Quote for MBW's LA show
"and i don't mean that in a good way"

excellent.

Don't get this, somebody covers your house in graphity and your happy about it? Fair does if you can sell one wall for £100k but art?
A criminal vandal who supports rioting? Mental.

For sure, it's art and it's also vandalism. It's more artistic because it's vandalism.

When you take away the vandalism thing, you're left with the pointless tat (that sold so well) at the MBW show.
