When I moved house a few months ago, it struck me just how many DVD's I have, probably somewhere around the 200 mark.

Once I got settled in, me and the missus started going through all our stuff to see what we can flog at a car boot sale. Going through my DVD's, I found around sixty that I'm really not fussed about, and will sell.

The rest however, are still stacked up in the corner of the spare room at the moment, and there's still well over 100 of them. I could probably filter out a few more to sell, but what got me thinking was the fact that I haven't watched any of them for a long time now, so what's the point in keeping them at all? A lot of them are on TV from time to time anyway.

Does anyone else have large DVD collections, and what have you done with them? Can you keep justifying having so many?

I've thought about keeping just the box sets, and a few of my 'favoured' DVD's, then putting the rest in a DVD wallet, that way I don't have hundreds of boxes cluttering up my space. But on the other hand, it's nice to have a large collection on the shelf to browse!

I stopped collecting years ago when I realized I never re-watched them and I actually had a fair few still in the wrapper. I sold a few on Ebay until they brought in the maximum postage nonsense.

I had the same experience. Before I moved from Reading to Edinburgh, I had somewhere north of 500, all BillyBookcased up across a wall in the living room.

I put them in boxes and left them in my mum's garage, fully intending to move them up once I got established.

2 years later I went off travelling, ran out of money, and she sold them for me and forwarded the cash (minus a commission hehe ). 3 years later and I haven't bought a single DVD since, using Lovefilm mainly these days.

I don't miss them in the slightest.

Moved already! laugh

I was a bit unsure whether it was 'Lounge' or 'Film & Radio' fodder, I chose 'Lounge' as it wasn't directly about films themselves.

I use Virgin's on-demand films now to see new stuff, so buying now isn't really needed.
I bought the first DVD in a while a week ago, as I don't think it will appear on-demand for some time, and was curious. (Turned out to be a worthwhile purchase though)

I did the same with Music years ago, I always download from iTunes now, it's rare that I buy a CD from a shop, and when I do, I bin the box and stick it in my CD wallet, as the only time I listen to CD's is in the car.

I should probably do the same for DVD's. It's just a shame to lose the boxes really.

I have around 250 (of about 300) that i keep meaning to sell at a car boot, £1 each and then give the last ones away, most of the ones i will not sell are the ones that i have already watched 2 or more times.

We have a bookcase for them, about 150 or so, sadly with a few still wrapped........... Have found a quick way to get rid of a few is to lend them out to friends/family........

I always like the idea of keeping them for nostalgia too.

A few years ago I was staying at a mates for a boozy weekend, and one night after coming home, we found a box of his old VHS movies; film releases and stuff recorded off the TV.

It was great to revisit some really old films, and see adverts from the early 90's.

I'd like to keep films and tuck them away, only to bring them out years down the line, when my kids are asking "What a DVD was" etc. laugh

- Rip DVDs to a computer using Make MKV. Will maintain quality, subtitles, surround sound, etc
- Buy a media streamer to stream the files from your PC to your TV. Loads of useful info here
- Put DVDs in boxes and stick them in the loft/garage

I didn't do that at all.

Nope.

Definitely not.

Thoroughly disapprove of anything of that ilk. Very immoral, and not nice at all.

I never saw the point of collecting vhs or dvd movies. £10 for something you watch once, and the next time you see it will be airing on TV.

Take a look at the re-sale value of DVDs, practically nothing.

Noob question, but what format does it save the files to HDD in? And what can play these back? (i.e. can I stream the resulting files via UPnP to my X360?)Cheers.

.mkv

Personally, I'd use .mp4 though.
