Why can't the UK sustain a mainstream evening chat show?

The Late Late Show was shown in the UK during the late '80s as I remember laughing at the presenter's name when I was a schoolboy.
Channel 4 took it up for a while as part of their "ethnic" programming brief. They also had a short news programme called "Irish Eye".Gay was a very popular name for boys in Ireland up until the 1960s. It was short for "Gabriel" as in the angel Gabriel. There is a well known Irish actor called Gabriel Byrne. He insisted on being called "Gabriel" rather than "Gay" - not because he was worried about the "Gay" tag but early on in his carreer he didn't want people to confuse him with the TV presenter Gay Byrne.
Gabriel Byrne is probably best known for his roles in "Defence of the Realm" and "The Usual Suspects".
I refuse to believe we can't do a nightly satire show.. Stewart has a team of 20 writers or something mad.
If we got all our best it would be insane.
Think Chris Morris presenting, then people in the back room such as Charlie Brooker, David Mitchel, Rory Bremner, maybe a few writers from private eye. The problem is, we wouldn't be able to afford such a show. In the UK we don't have the huge ratings that could pay for all those people to be involved.

Half that team was on 10 O'Clock live which had some good bits but failed by trying to be too political, preachy and pious.
On the other hand, the 11 O'Clock show was one of the funniest TV shows IMHO as it just took the piss rather then trying to be too deep which you really can't do in 5 minute segments.
Just because 10 o'clock live sucked donkey dick doesn't mean that they can't output decent material.
They just need someone to remind them that ALL the political parties are as ridiculous as each other. 10 o'clock live was too left leaning, imo. Also, a smaller audience was needed who didn't laugh at every little thing like mindless drones.
Chris Morris and Rory Bremner would add much needed structure to the writing team as they're satire vets.
I remember being so excited about 10 o'clock live and then within about 10 seconds I was being preached to.. Preaching isn't funny and I can't believe they thought that's the direction they should go with the show.

One issue with satire is that the mainstream right in the states are a bit nuts so the media lovies can stay left of them and still seem normal....ala Jon Stewart, Colbert, etc. Over here our mainstream right is actual far more sensible (unless Cameron belives in Adam & Eve and thinks TRex was a hoax) so for the media to stay left they need to go to far and end up coming over like the ones who are nuts.

Spitting Image never found this a problem.I think the problem is Britain is a small country, and sometimes there isn't that much going on.
This thread has got me thinking of Clarksons show too. Electrodes in vegetables was another bit, making onions, gherkins etc. glow, and eggs in a microwave?
I liked TFI Friday at the time, it was a good mix of chat, silly bits (fat lookalikes ) and music. I was a student at the time so that's probably the main reason. Shaun Ryder at teatime was always interesting television...
And another vote for Dara O'Briain.

Like someone already mentioned the main problem would be the guests. In the US they are a doorstep away from n big A lister and they are happy to appear on chat shows without actually plugging a book/tv show/movie etc but in the UK we already struggle to get big celebs for Friday night chat show and the big ones pretty much only apear because they are in town to plug their movie with the usual rehearsed questions and responses that have been asked a million times.

The 'turkey' cannon was a classic, metal bin hairspray and turkey.I liked TFI Friday at the time, it was a good mix of chat, silly bits (fat lookalikes ) and music. I was a student at the time so that's probably the main reason. Shaun Ryder at teatime was always interesting television...
