I think space 1999 might be a problem - Maybe Space 2099.

Having looked at a you tube clip about BJ and the bear (what a name eh???) i didn't realise how corny it was, but as a kid i loved it.

Yeah. I remember liking the colour of the cab, similar to Starskey's car.
I had forgotten the 'bear' was a chimp. His cab looks a bit like Optimus as well

I loved Space 1999...follow that format, get some big name yanks in it, and then pack it with home grown talent. The only thing that makes me relent is that recent effort on the BBC...it was bloody awful.
