Afternoon all,

(Mods, I don't know where this should go!)

I have Sky, however I am also from Yorkshire and am tight.

Rumour has it that I can cancel my subscription and pay a one off fee for a freeview card, turning my box into a freeview one.

Has anyone done this before? Any good?

Thanks

I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?
All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just £25. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.
I doubt you can simply cancel if still under contract. If out of contract, they will probably try to entice you to stay with discounted goodies. Also I doubt that Sky+ will work without a Sky subscription. However replacing the Sky+ box with a Humax or similar will sort this.

Sky+ won't work.

Get a Humax Freesat instead smile

If you cancel your sky subscription, you still get the basic channels, plus e4/more 4, bbc 3 itv2 etc... so I I personally wouldn't even bother with the Freesat from Sky.

I have Freesat downstairs and the cancelled sky subscription upstairs - there's not much difference between the two really.

AFAIK you'll get all the BBC channels, lots of ITVs with numbers, C4 and Five packs and some shopping stuff.

I setup an old box with these on the blue button favourites, as there are lots of "gaps" inbetween - IIRC, for example you get Five, then no UK Gold or Watch, then BBC 3.

The Sky+ function also stops.

Done this a while ago before Sky fked us over on a seperate issue which resulted in my Sky+ box to reside in a wheelie bin with hammer marks all over it.

IF you are out of contract then you pay around £20 for a viewing card for which you will have access to all Freesat channels (google freesat for channel list). This card will last for 2-3 years before you have to renew with a further £20.

You will lose Sky+ fuctions (record, pause, etc).

To be honest if this is going to be your main box you may as well invest in a PVR box. Don't know your subcription details but you can have Sky phone and broadband without needing Sky TV.
