Thanks, I think I've only seen that once and a very long time ago, may have to re-visit.
I watched it the other day to trial my new A/V speakers and it is still fantastic - doesn't seem to have dated as much as other 90s stuff.
Also watched it again the other day.

Like it, but it's a bit self-indulgent. It could probably have been a good 45mins shorter without really being any worse. Some bits seem to have been added for little reason.

Good film, but not top 5 by any stretch (IMO smile).

The Abyss is a gem, but it's a forgotten gem, chances are newer cinema goers probably won't be aware of it.
Holy crap the Abyss was 1989 thas over 30 years ago
Directors Cut with radically different ending is the one to search out, IMO.

I have the special edition 2 disk set that has the original theatrical version and the directors cut.I actually prefer the theatrical version.

Never knew it had an alternate ending...or I've forgotten it.

The special edition doesn't really offer anything more than some watery devastation IIRC.

I've always thought The Abyss would work fine without the alien storyline (although it would lose the amazing water tentacle scene and Lindsey's sarcastic line "hands up those who think that was a Russian water tentacle?"). Change the story so that Virgil has to defuse the bomb because if it goes off it will cause a tsunami, or something. Unfortunately in this version I can't see a plausible way to rescue him.

Im nine years late to the thread, and I haven’t read what others have said. But whatever. Here’s mine.

The crew of the Nostromo are at the dinner table when John Hurt begins to choke. He’s writhing in agony.
And then “the moment”.
A spurt of blood from his chest, and the crew stand frozen in shock.

Everyone knows the scene, but I still remember the effect it had on me as a 14yo in a dark cinema.
